– The present naming is premised on Hauraki – the North Shore suburb – being the primary topic. However, for the longest period and up to the present day, the primary topic has been a land area whose boundaries vary depending on definition, but which is centered on the Hauraki Plains. Of the 6 articles at Hauraki (disambiguation) that are about land areas (i.e. including the electorates, but excluding the Gulf and radio), 5 are based in this area, with the North Shore suburb being the exception. It is also worth noting a historical definition that we do not have an article for, which is the area stretching from the Firth of Thames south to Putāruru – see The Hauraki District in the 1966 Encyclopaedia. The suburb, though, is separate from the area centred on the Plains and its use of the name 'Hauraki' seems to have developed only in recent decades. I welcome additional info, but it seems that the suburb was once considered part of Takapuna, and took its current identity from Hauraki Corner, which had taken its name from the intersection of Lake Road and Hauraki Road. My impression is that the Hauraki suburb is not particularly well known outside the North Shore, even in the rest of Auckland, let alone the rest of NZ.

Is one of the other articles the primary topic? Hauraki District and Hauraki Plains may or may not have been candidates, but their names don't need disambiguating, so can be ignored. The electorates are too specialised. If we had articles that matched the 1966 Encyclopaedia definition, or the Te Ara definition of the territory of the Marutūāhu group of tribes (see The Hauraki region), they may have been candidates. All in all, it seems best to take it that none of the articles is the primary topic for 'Hauraki'. In that case, the suburb article needs a disambiguator, and 'New Zealand' won't do as we have the other areas called 'Hauraki', so it should be 'Auckland'. And the disambiguation page should be moved to the simple "ambiguous term itself", per WP:DABNAME. Another reason for wanting this change is that I have recently fixed 17 articles that incorrectly had wikilinks to Hauraki the suburb, when they were referring to the other area. I fear that more such links will be created, but hope that if the simple 'Hauraki' becomes the name of the disambiguation page, editors would be more likely to realise they are making an error linking to it. • I agree that the Auckland suburb should not be the primary topic. As a current resident of that suburb it is usually necessary to explain to anyone not familiar with the North Shore where exactly Hauraki is and, especially for most non-Aucklanders, that it is not south of the Bombays. My preference for the primary topic would be for the creation of an article using the historical definition as this predates both Hauraki Plains and Hauraki District. • Support as the North Shore suburb clearly isn't the primary topic. I do have sympathy for DerbyCountyinNZ's suggestion but prior to that article being written, we should move this as it is proposed. Just my impression as someone not from that part of the country: I would agree that the Auckland suburb doesn't seem to be the primary topic using the name Hauraki. If "Hauraki" came up in conversation and it was clear from context that a place was meant I would assume either Hauraki Gulf or Hauraki District.-161.29.216.215 (talk) 08:42, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

• Support, looks like this might have been a case for WP:RM/TR. For reference, in last month's clickstreams, https://wikinav.toolforge.org/?language=en&title=Hauraki shows the hatnote being the only identifiable outgoing destination, which typically indicates a problem with navigation. --Joy (talk) 10:01, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

It might also be a good idea to move the page to Hauraki (Auckland suburb) as the Hauraki Gulf is partially within the Auckland region. Prosperosity (talk) 20:42, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

Primary School section needs pruning

While this article is getting some attention, I'm itching to cut back the primary school section, which is very promotional in tone currently. Duncnbiscuit (talk) 00:41, 30 May 2024 (UTC)

I mentioned naming above. It there is citable info about the naming, or just a bit on history of Hauraki Corner, that would be a welcome addition. Nurg (talk) 01:59, 30 May 2024 (UTC)

@Nurg, there isn't a huge amount of notable material about the suburb online, so a trip to Takapuna Library's local history section is probably on the cards. It was worth finding out that the Wilson Trust/school and St Leonard's Beach fall within the official boundaries, along the Huaraki Corner Store, that could give a bit more notable content to the article.
