Proper Name

edit

Wheres the evidence that the "proper name" is Mediobogdum ? The Ordnance Survey's 1:25 000 map names it as Hardknott Castle Roman Fort as do all guide books. I've never heard anybody call it Mediobogdum in all the time I've visited the Lake District. Mick Knapton 19:07, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

The OS's Landranger maps show its ancient name as "MEDIOBOGDVM" (V=>U of course). Direct link to OS Getamap I'm not sure I'd agree that this is the appropriate name for this article however, and such a change should have been discussed. Halsteadk 19:42, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Mediobogdum is the name the Romans knew it by. The Ravenna Comsmology refers to a fort called Mediobogdum between the forts of Galava (Ambleside) and Glannoventa (Ravenglass). "Hardknott Fort" is the only one which fits the bill. Lianachan 22:02, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I moved it to Hardknott Roman Fort, as this is the title that English Heritage uses. The next time a Roman Centurion logs on and can't find Mediobogdum, please pass on my apologies. Pyrope 14:34, 20 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

This article seems to have been moved back to the obscure Latin name. Since the last person that used this name died over one and a half millennia ago I'm not at all sure who reckons that "Mediobogdum" is the WP:COMMONNAME for what everybody else calls Hardknott Fort... Unless anyone can come up with an argument better than "other Roman articles have absurd names too" then I propose to move this article back to Hardknott Roman Fort. Any objections? Pyrope 14:04, 23 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
No objections, should never have been moved in the first place Mick Knapton (talk) 14:29, 23 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
