Charlemagne!???

edit

Someone put Charlemagne as people from Gyor. Is it a joke?

The double acute

edit

The ő in Győr has to be replaced with some other character in the English Wikipedia, otherwise the article title will look wrong due to character set difference. Now, we can use "Gyor", "Györ" or even "Gyõr". I'm not sure which is the best compromise. --Joy [shallot] 20:44, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)

The last one is definitely inacceptable and since the Hungarian language distinguishes between a short ö (two points) and a long ö (two little lines as in Gyor), the only "correct" solution is to use Gyor without diacritics. The problem is that I myself "intuitively" usually use the normal ö instead of the long ö in the Wikipedia and in other similar cases - but we can make a redirect... By the way, why does the English Wiki not switch to UTF 8 ? - the French and German wiki has done so already and it works very well Juro 22:20, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I think using Györ would be better than using Gyor because there is more difference between O and Ő than between Ö and Ő. Does Ő really not show when someone uses other encoding? I switched my browser to West European encoding now and still I see the letters. Alensha 11:04, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

The article content isn't the problem, it's the title. As long as the English Wikipedia continues to use Latin 1 as the character set for titles, the character no. 336 won't be shown properly in the title. --Joy [shallot] 12:20, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

The name

edit

The town got its Hungarian name Győr. Yes, but from where? Is it a lexical word of Hungarian? If so, what does it mean? If it's "just a name", where does it come from? --Angr/tɔk mi 2 July 2005 17:56 (UTC)

It's an archaic version of the word gyűrű, which means ring. Possibly refers to a circular castle that stood here. (See also: Diósgyőr.) Sorry it took so long to answer, there aren't too many Hungarian editors here and I don't keep an eye on all articles :-) Alensha 13:14, 12 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Name

edit

Please someone tell me if we really need all these names in those nations' languages inhabiting this city. Were more of them than of Rusyns, Jewish people, Armenians etc.? Squash Racket (talk) 15:15, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Slovaks, Croatians, Germans used to live there in great numbers. The Turkish name is mentioned in the History section of the article, so is relevant too. Tankred (talk) 15:21, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
You also have a source for your first sentence? Squash Racket (talk) 15:22, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Population statistics

edit

The population statistics, especially religion, in he infobox is certainly wrong, probably due to vandalism. It should be checked.

History

edit

The second and third sentences read: "The first large settlement dates back to the 5th century BCE; the inhabitants were Celts. They called the town Ara Bona "Good altar", later contracted to Arrabona, a name which was used until the eighth century." It is unlikely the Celts called the city Ara Bona as that is bastardized Latin and is more likely what the Romans called the city. (Ara is the Latin name of the constellation 'the Altar' and some variation of bonum is good in many Romance languages.) In Celtic, it would be something similar to Athrú maith (according to Google translate) which is good altar in Gaelic, a Celtic language. It's possible that something like Arrabona was the name for the Celtics, but it was Latinized to a name acceptable to the Roman Catholic Church which dominated Central Europe at the time. I don't dispute Arrabona is an older name for the city. Just doubt the origin story of the name. SEKluth (talk) 21:31, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Most important city of northwest Hungary

edit

The Győr article starts out with:

Győr ... is the most important city of northwest Hungary ...

This doesn't seem like a neutral point of view? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.218.245.40 (talk) 22:27, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Siege of 1594

edit

Gyor in 1594

edit

Here is a brief story of the fall of Gyor. I will not spend my time adding to the article and having an "editor" delete it. I offer the info and someone smarter than I am can add it in the proper format.

During the Long Turkish War (1593-1606), on July 31, 1594, the Grand Vezir, with his large imperial army, besieged Győr, a vital fortress on the Danube protecting the routes to Vienna.

While the fortress was under siege, Archduke Matthias, with 50,000 men, stayed in the Szigetköz (Slovak: Malý Žitný ostrov).  Though he sent supplies, he not nothing to lift the siege.  Castellan Ferdinand Hardegg and his deputy Niklas Perlin plead for help but Matthias’ army does not move.  Circa September 10, Matthias withdraws from the Szigetköz and morale plummets in Győr.

After two months of siege, with the ramparts destroyed, and a defence could not be made against a large assault, the garrison surrenders on September 27 and leaves the fortress two days later.  On October 9, Hardegg and Perlin were brought to Vienna and investigated for their surrender.  Though the garrison had done everything possible, the court determined that there was no reason to surrender the strongest fortress in Christendom.  There is no investigation of Matthias’ inaction.  Hardegg and Perlin are found guilty and King Rudolf II sentenced them to death.  On June 15, 1595 at 9 a.m. in Vienna's Am Hof square, Hardegg’s right hand, by which he signed the surrender papers was cut off and he was beheaded. 198.251.56.38 (talk) 00:47, 16 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
