Gaya's weekly market takes place on Tuesdays. While Gaya is generally a safe town, there are often pick-pockets at the market or the auto-gares. There are two auto-gares or locations to hire a spot in a car. One is on the main road as you enter town on your left, across the street from the bank and Western Union office. There you can pay for a spot in a car going to Dosso or Niamey in Niger and various other towns in Nigeria. The other auto-gare is on the far end of the town. A dirt road on the right off the main road travels about 1 km to this stop where you can pay for a spot on a more traditional "bush taxi" to various towns up and down the dirt road connecting Gaya and Margou (where the dirt road connects back up with the paved road running between Niamey and Dosso). The post office in town is on the far side of town closer to Malanville, Benin on the left. Gaya does not have taxis, and the only way to travel around town without private transport is by foot, or by hiring a motorcycle. The driver will generally take you anywhere in the city for about fifty cents, or across the bridge to Malanville, Benin (about 8 km from Gaya) for about a dollar.
