Cyndi Lauper as a Gay Icon

Cyndi Lauper is unmistakably a modern celebrity gay icon. Where is she noted in this article? Her absence leaves out an important part of history. 162.251.172.28 (talk) 10:17, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for bringing her to our attention. :) You have to remember that the people on Wikipedia are not necessarily experts, and an article such as this may never be fully "complete". Not everyone is familiar with every gay icon in existence. Regarding Cindy Lauper, if you have found any reliable sources discussing her status as a gay icon, then you can simply add them in the appropriate section. --PanagiotisZois (talk) 12:28, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

Charli XCX

To me at least, she’s kinda the definition of a gay icon. Her fan base is largely LGBT, she’s known for working with LGBT producers and musicians like Rina Sawayama and SOPHIE, and she’s incredibly out about her support of LGBT rights Serok Ayris (talk) 03:31, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

I'm a little surprised at this too, as her gay icon status is mentioned at Ursula (The Little Mermaid) and is sourced. GnocchiFan (talk) 12:50, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

The short answer is that this article is a bit of a mess. Probably we should list very few or no examples, and merge out the extensive listings into a separate list article. Suriname0 (talk) 17:35, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply here. I think we should probably as few examples as possible – everyone has their own opinion on who counts as a gay icon, and there is no way this article going to be an exhaustive overview. Saint Sebastian

Where is the citation for this? This is also not mentioned on the Saint Sebastian page 2601:645:400:A:7512:7F15:E746:B398 (talk) 02:48, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

Good catch, this was an error I introduced when I split out List of gay icons. Added some refs, and from the look of a quick Google search there may be better sources out there. This line of contemporary discusson around Saint Sebastian should probably be mentioned on his page. Suriname0 (talk) 19:58, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

Many important ones omitted

Minelli seems conspicuously absent, as is Midler, Streisand, Diana Ross, etc. These people have been gay icons for much longer than many of the people listed, longer than some have been alive. Minelli’s Wikipedia specifically mentions she is a gay icon as well and cites this article.
