Dr GVK Reddy was born on 22nd March, 1937 in Kothur Village of Nellore District in Andhra Pradesh. Dr Reddy did his basic schooling from his village, early college from Nellore and graduated from Hyderabad. He later completed the Owner/President Management (OPM) Program from Harvard Business School, USA.
Dr GVK Reddy, is the Founder and Chairman of GVK, a diversified business conglomerate with a predominant focus on infrastructure development. He also heads GVK EMRI, one of the most significant Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives of GVK. This is an emergency response services provider under a Public Private Partnership model spread across 15 states and two UTs of India. Dr Reddy is a philanthropist and a keen supporter of India’s budding sporting talent.
Dr GVK Reddy began his career by contracting major irrigation projects including bridges, dams and irrigation canals. GVK has today emerged as one of the key players in India’s infrastructure development. Apart from Airports, Roads & Power, GVK has significant presence in Hospitality and Life-Sciences sectors.
Dr GVK Reddy has been a pioneer in India’s infrastructure sector. Guided by his vision and leadership, GVK has successfully implemented projects in record time.
GVK set up India’s first Independent Power Project (IPP) in the private sector at Jegurupadu, Andhra Pradesh to generate 217 MW power and added another 228 MW in the second phase. As part of a buy-back arrangement, the AP Govt took over the operations of the Phase 1 plant in 2016.
• GVK commissioned another power plant, Gautami at Kakinada, AP, to generate 464 MW power.
• GVK has successfully executed India’s first six-lane expressway connecting Jaipur to Kishangarh in the state of Rajasthan. GVK has also developed a four-lane road project between Deoli and Kota in Rajasthan.
• GVK has developed and commissioned a 330 MW hydro power project in the state of Uttarakhand and a 540 MW thermal power project in the state of Punjab.
• GVK is engaged in the operation and modernization of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, which has been termed as one of the most challenging infrastructure projects in the world. GVK CSIA’s new integrated Terminal 2 which commenced operations on 12 February, 2014, has bagged many awards and accolades and attained an iconic status across the globe for integrating a world-class design, infrastructure and operational efficiency.
• In 2009, GVK took over the management of Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru and developed the infrastructure to meet the growing air traffic. The new Terminal at KIA was brought on par with the best in the world with enhanced design and facilities to elevate passengers’ travel experience. Work was also begun on a new Terminal 2 and a second runway. However, GVK divested its entire shareholding to Fairfax India Holdings Corporation in July, 2017.
• In the hospitality sector, GVK has built some of the finest luxury hotels in Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Chennai and Mumbai. GVK currently owns seven 5-star hotels.
• GVK has set up GVK one, a mega retail mall spread over 7,10,000 sq ft in Hyderabad.
• GVK’s Mumbai International Airport Ltd will be developing and managing the Greenfield 60 million passengers per annum capacity Navi Mumbai International Airport. Work has begun in earnest and GVK has appointed world renowned architects M/s. Zaha Hadid to design the Central Terminal Complex.
Under Dr GVK Reddy’s able leadership, GVK EMRI, a not-for-profit professional organization in the Public Private Partnership mode, is setting new standards in the field of emergency response services across the country. GVK EMRI is the only organized professional emergency service provider in the country operating the 108 Emergency Response Service. This service is spread across India in 15 states and two Union Territories, covering over 850 million people, and saves lakhs of lives annually. GVK EMRI operates with over 13,000 state-of-the-art ambulances employing over 50,000 people.
In July 2016, GVK EMRI Lanka began operations of the 1900 Suwaseriya service in collaboration with the Government of Sri Lanka and assistance from the Government of India. This service was further expanded nationwide during July, 2018.
Dr GVK Reddy has set up the GVK Foundation which has been sponsoring and supporting underprivileged students in the field of education, housing schemes, and provision of drinking water to select villages in Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Dr GVK Reddy is a sports enthusiast and has been consistently encouraging and nurturing budding young sporting talent. Dr Reddy has set up a tennis academy in Hyderabad to groom youngsters with potential to bring sporting glory to India. He has been sponsoring events such as the Afro-Asian Games held in Hyderabad in 2001 and the GVK AISTA Senior Citizen National Tennis Championships since 1996.
Dr GVK Reddy has been the recipient of many awards and accolades, notable among these are:
• Felicitated by the Turf Authorities of India (TAI) for the lead role played by GVK in India's infrastructure development at the TAI Awards 2019.
• ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the ‘Realty Plus Conclave & Excellence Awards -South 2017’.
• “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the Construction Times Annual Awards, 2017.
• “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the Construction Week India Annual Awards, 2017.
• “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the 6th EPC World Awards, 2017 for contribution towards infrastructure and construction sectors.
• “Infrastructure Person of the Year – 2014” by Construction Week India Awards.
• “Lifetime Achievement Award” for contribution to country’s aviation sector at India Aviation Awards 2014.
• “Infrastructure Person of the Year - 2013” by Construction Week India Awards.
• “Power Brands Corporate Luminary of the Year 2012 Award” by Power Brands.
• Awarded “PADMA BHUSHAN” by the Hon’ble President, Government of India in 2011.
• “Construction World - Man of the Year 2011” awarded by Construction World.
• “Best First Generation Entrepreneur of the Year” 2010 award under the India Business Leaders Awards instituted by CNBC TV-18.
• “Entrepreneur of the Year Award” in 2009 from Economic Times.
• GVK was named the “Most Promising Infrastructure Company” for the year 2009 by KPMG – Infrastructure Today.
• Conferred with the honorary title, Doctor of Philosophy by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, India in 2008, in recognition of his dynamism, outstanding brilliance and invaluable contribution to the field of entrepreneurship and society improvement.
