New Name 2017

edit

IPENZ has announced that it will change its name to Engineering New Zealand later in 2017. Propose that this article be renamed accordingly. --Pakaraki (talk) 19:01, 8 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Page issues

edit

I noticed that Panamitsu recently removed a substantial section for being "advertising." While I favour improving the content rather than outright removing it, I agree that it does have issues. A decent amount of the prose on the page is written using self-promotional language and also lacks sources.

So I went through the edit history and it seems that a lot of what is currently on the page comes from a 2017 edit by a user called Engineeringnewzealand. Given the name, the fact that they haven't edited any other pages, and the langauge used when editing I think that it is highly likely that this user is associated with the organisation that is the subject of the page.

A lot of what Engineeringnewzealand edited was already in place and had references and appropriate language (their edit removed many of the references and changed the wording). As a result, I think that most of it should be salvageable by adding references and rewriting the self-promotional sections instead of outright deleting them (including most of the stuff that was already removed by Panamitsu).

What do others think? MangoMan11 (talk) 23:54, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

In providing my comments, I need to disclose that I am a Retired Fellow of Engineering New Zealand. My view is that including descriptions about the membership classes of a professional institution is valid. Like many other professional bodies, Engineering New Zealand is a "member-based" organisation, and has a range of membership classes. These classes of membership are important to the functions and character of the organisation. Some of the membership criteria are aligned with international mutual recognition agreements between equivalent engineering professional bodies in other countries (eg Washington Accord - see [1]). Promotional language must be avoided, but I consider that a concise factual approach to the membership classes of a professional institution is suitable content for the encyclopedia, and is not "advertising". I favour salvaging the previous content as suggested by MangoMan11. Because of my conflict of interest, I will refrain from editing the page. Marshelec (talk) 00:47, 28 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
