Not standalone article?

edit

If this material is necessary (I'm not sure it is), it should be a section of the economics article, not a stand-alone article. CRETOG8(t/c) 16:57, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Reply I think an article on definitions might be better than having a large section on the already busy main economics page! Perhaps we should give it a chance first. Best wishes (Msrasnw (talk) 17:10, 23 November 2011 (UTC))Reply

The caution of both comments is a welcome change of pace.
I believe that the current article as a standalone is warranted (so keep this article & allow for its future growth (a lot deserves to said on it). But an Economics section right after the lead is also warranted for continuity with the Lead, (e.g., econ imperialism) and to pique interest in what immediately follows, Micro, Macro, etc., even unto Economics#History. One reason it might pique interest is that most readers might pique interest is in seeing both the continuity, even with changes in definitions over time. Done badly, it's bad. Done weil, just the reverse.
Brevity relative to the major Econ sections is important, as suggested by Msrasnw's comments at Talk:Econ. There needs to be a narrative for such a section to stop. I have tried to provide such a narrative as shown by {}the omitted earlier material (regrettably indicated only in the next edit) and the current [22:31, 15 December 2011 (UTC)] edit, whose differences are indicated at http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Definitions_of_economics&diff=466061938&oldid=465669676. The text (without footnotes) on my (small) screen is less than one screen -- not so large.
What would you think of someone (other than me) asking for comment on it at the Econ talk page here for a week? Then whatever survives the editing process on which there is minimal dissent goes to Econ, (with a heading there such as "Modern definitions of the subject"?). The full text as of before the article edit noted above could then return, with whatever changes were made along the way. I do think that that longer text is appropriate for this article. May I say too that I was much impressed by Msrasnw's work on this page -- one reason I was heartened enough to try edits here. --Thomasmeeks (talk) 21:52, 13 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Best wishes and good luck with your plans. I am not sure what they are yet. But I have faith and thank you for your kind words. (Msrasnw (talk) 21:32, 14 December 2011 (UTC))Reply
Well, somebody (not me) has been very patient as to the recent flurry of edits.
Okay, I'll put something on the Talk:Econ page soliciting comment on a proposed new Econ section following the lead of the Econ article along the lines of the current edit here. --Thomasmeeks (talk) 22:31, 15 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I think it's important to have a definitions article for this term. I've started other such articles, like Definitions of Palestine, because people use the word in so many different ways that the way one writer uses the word influences the reader, e.g., how we think of "the Palestinian people" (a distinct ethnic/national group, or just a bunch of Arabs who happen to live in a particular region?) or "a Palestinian state" (is Jordan one, or has no such thing ever been created?).

One definition of economics is "how society distributes goods" (implying that it is or should be a group activity, which is endorsed by socialists). Another definition takes more of an individualistic approach, defining it as how people choose to produce or exchange goods (endorsed by free market advocates, aka Capitalists).

People sometimes use definitions to frame an issue in such a way that their viewpoint automatically dominates. One reason I joined Wikipedia is to describe these frameworks, which is (I believe) in the highest tradition of neutral writing. I don't want to make my idea dominate you; rather, I want to distinguish between the various ideas so that you and I can each make a free, informed choice. --Uncle Ed (talk) 15:54, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

PRO: I am for a separate article but I would offer that I think it should give the reader some information on how the thought on the definition has evolved over time. In other words, reorganize the definition article along a timeline basis ... Cheers ... Risk Engineer (talk) 17:44, 13 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

James Steuart - English or Scot?

edit

A reader writes to the Wikimedia Foundation to note that Sir James Steuart should be identified as a Scot, rather than English.

I hope someone can make the change, if appropriate, or explain, if not. I will ask the reader to watch this space.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 14:11, 10 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

OK, thx. Change noted per this WP:DIFF: http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Definitions_of_economics&diff=537634472&oldid=532179496.
BTW, anyone with access to the Web could make the change by:
  • clicking on the Edit tab at the top
  • making the edit change
  • clicking the Show preview button at the bottom.
But this a good way too. A little better as to security to register as a Wikipedia user first (on which, Wikipedia:Tutorial/Registration), though.
Cheers. --Thomasmeeks (talk) 01:43, 11 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
