Maybe this article would be better placed under "cowboy culture". --Bejnar (talk) 23:56, 9 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Citations and questions of article scope

edit

So I have some serious concerns with the content of this article. Not only is citation sparse, the article is mostly just a grab bag of links in list form, rather than a discussion of the subculture itself. For example, the section on “Notable People,” has no citations at all, and appears to list people as following a Western lifestyle solely based on either their professional persona or a general public association with a Western aesthetic. While the section could perhaps be spun-off into its own list article, the current lack of citations and associated BLP concerns gives me pause.

Additionally, the sections “Notable livestock and companions,” and most of the subsections under “Notable entities” seem, if not quite irrelevant to the article, more like a directory of Western-adjacent entities than befits an article about a subculture (see WP:NOTDIRECTORY). Perhaps some could be split into their own list articles, say “List of Western-Themed Parks?”

While I considered making a bunch of pretty sweeping removals, due to the possibility of moving some of the content elsewhere I’ve instead left a general rewrite template. Honestly, I’m not really sure what should be done - possibly just major rewrites. Part of the difficulty is that the stated subject of the article isn’t defined or discussed with any depth, and the sections aren't very cohesive. Much of the “Origins” discussion is devoted to the distinction between country and western music, and in the process makes some dubious claims (such as 1956 Billboard as origin of term “country and western”). The other non-list sections allude to a broader “Western Lifestyle,” but don’t really discuss it, instead linking to other articles about Western-themed media. Western lifestyleCowboy culture – "Western lifestyle" could easily be mistaken for lifestyles of the Western world. As Wikipedia is a global encyclopedia, I think the proposed change is best. Note that there has been talk to move it to this title since 2014, but no response. GnocchiFan (talk) 12:08, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Support clearly "Western lifestyle" refers to that of the Western World, as can be seen by a truckload of medical research on how poor it is, using that term, not meaning country and western cowboy lifestyle. -- 65.92.247.66 (talk) 08:21, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Weak support, but searching the title does come with a lot articles referring to the Western diet or climate impact etc. Although this probably apply to many of the other articles titled just "Western". Cowboy culture is the only alternative name in the actual article, but is it the only one? DankJae 17:32, 2 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
