Dispute and NPOV
editChantek has a vocabulary of several hundred signs, and understands both spoken English and American Sign Language.
mastered the use of a number of intellectual skills, including sign language
This is disputed and the article is generally very one sided. - FrancisTyers 18:29, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
- Agree that this article is quite POV and one-sided. We're making active attempts to take an NPOV approach to the same topic at Koko (gorilla). At some point, this article should be edited to conform. Martinp 04:37, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
What bothers me about this article is that I know for a fact that although Chantek may have participated in these activities in the past or while he was with Dr. Miles, he now lives in a naturalistic habitat at Zoo Atlanta and does not participate in these activities and is not a part of any research project where he would perform these activities. This article is misleading.
- That is not entirely true... at least as of just a few years ago, when I was taking classes with Miles. It is true that he is in a naturalistic enclosure, and that he is no longer being so continuously studied, trained, etc.--most of his more interesting developments occurred in his youth. However, unless things have changed in the past couple of years, Miles is still studying Chantek, visiting him on a regular basis at the Atlanta Zoo and attempting to continue his linguistic development. That being said, the article is a bit unbalanced; even though I don't always agree with the critics of ape language, they have made some important and credible criticisms that need to be addressed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.107.248.159 (talk) 05:44, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
Multiple articles on great ape language
editThis article is one of at least 16 articles on Wikipedia primarily about the fascinating but controversial subject of Great ape language. These articles have been created independently and contain much interesting but uncoordinated information, varying levels of NPOV, and differences in categorization, stubbing, and references. Those of us working on them should explore better coordinating our efforts so as to share the best we have created and avoid unnecessary duplication. I have somewhat arbitrarily put the list of 16 articles on Talk:Great ape language and would encourage us to informally coordinate efforts there. Martinp 18:02, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
Red links
editI note that the red links I removed have been reverted. Given that Dr. Miles and Chantek Foundation have been red links since this page was created 5 years ago, and the ApeNet page was deleted two years ago for being non-notable, I'm removing them again. If anyone feels motivated to create pages for either of the first two, or re-create a page for the third (with content which makes it notable), please feel free to: in the meantime, I'm going to excise the red links again ~dom Kaos~ (talk) 08:15, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Untitled
editI believe the priority rating on editing for veracity and objectivity this article should be raised for two reasons:
First, Chantek was recently featured on an episode of the PBS series "My Wild Affair" and will therefore have a higher profile among people who are likely to research him online.
Also, he is mentioned in an article on Slate.com today (8/21/2014).
Finally, this article is EXTRAORDINARILY biased in favor of the lead researcher, Lyn Miles, to the point where it seems clear it was written either by her or a proxy. It is very distorted, glosses over many facts associated with the case, as well as contrasting viewpoints as to the appropriateness of the research methodology. In addition, it does not address the ethical concerns of such research and its outcomes for the animals used.
