Skip Status

edit

Regarding Russ Howard throwing second stones but calling shots: who, effectively, is the skip? I presume it's Brad, since the team is Team Gushue. Is Russ a second with the privilege o

Gushue is widely considered the skip. He may not be the one in the house calling the shots as a skip is nomally defined as, but he is the team's leader, and effectively gets to trump Howard when it comes to what shots the team makes. --  Earl Andrew - talk 04:39, 27 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
According to Olympic rules, Russ was the skip, with Brad's official title as "Fourth". This is simply because Olympic rules define the skip as the person holding the broom for 6 throws. In practice, the order of authority went Brad-Mark-Russ. While Russ's advice was usually followed, both Brad and Mark had priority. This arrangement caused some friction in the early days of the Olympic round robin, when both Mark and Russ were frustrated with their throwing performances; by the last week or so, Russ was effectively calling most of the shots, but Brad always had the final say, and Mark rarely (if ever) disagreed i like youFebruary 2006 (UTC)

Ancestry

Umm... I have no idea, maybe someone can confirm or deny, but is Brad Raymond Gushue related to Raymond Gushue?

Brad's father's name also happens to be Raymond Gushue. That's about all I can help you . -- Earl Andrew - talk 17:27, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Corner Brook Curling Club

edit

Team Gushue does not curl out of the Corner Brook Curling Club. They only had to do that to qualify for the Provincial Tankard in Gander because their own club the ReMax Centre (formerly the St. John's Curling Club) had their playdowns when Team Gushue were away at a tournament in Winnipeg. Team Gushue still curls out of the ReMax Centre. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by NewfieIdol (talkcontribs) 16:32, 11 April 2007 (UTC).Reply

"Newfoundlander"

edit

Referring to the 2006 Winter Olympics, the article says: "With his teammates, Gushue became the first Newfoundlander ever to win an Olympic gold medal."

Someone has just posted to the Entertainment Reference Desk (it should have been here, but never mind) to say that that description belongs to Harry Watson, who won one in hockey in 1924. However, although Watson was born in Newfoundland, he had moved to Canada and was playing for the Canadian team when he won. (Of course Newfoundland was not part of Canada then.) Should "Newfoundlander" be understood as someone born there, or someone resident there? Would the sentence be correct if it was changed to "Newfoundland resident"? --76.71.6.254 (talk) 07:36, 10 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

A quick check on the lists of participating nations indicates that Newfoundland never competed in its own right. Gushue also won his medal as a Canadian. Wymspen (talk) 09:45, 10 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
