British English

Both British and American spelling are commonly used in Belize, but American spelling is actually more common these days, even from official sources like the government. I think it's fine to retain the British spelling convention for this article for now, but I think at some point it will make more sense to switch it, like maybe when Belize leaves the Commonwealth (which will probably happen within the next few years). If anyone has opinions on this, feel free to share, although I realize it's a pedantic topic! Nosferattus (talk) 02:11, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

I've gotta disagree with this, as a fellow Bzean, and am puzzled to learn that we'll prolly leave the Commonwealth soon (?). I've only seen AmE in business circles (esp. in tourism sector, which mostly caters to Americans). In schools, govt, etc. I still see BrE or CarE, sometimes with Oxford spelling, just as is common in Jamaica, Barbados, etc. I say we not switch this article's spelling. – Asdfjrjjj (talk) 13:58, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello Asdfjrjjj! It is a pleasure to meet you! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I expected my suggestion might be a bit controversial. I agree that how much you encounter American vs. British spelling in Belize depends a lot on the context (with the added complication of having Kriol spelling in the mix as well). But I do think the popularity of American spelling has increased significantly, and I would contend that it is at least as common overall as British spelling at this point. For example, if you search all the press releases at the Belize Governement Press Office for 'neighbor' vs. 'neighbour', the American spelling is more common. Same for airplane vs. aeroplane, behavior vs. behaviour, program vs. programme, etc. I tried the same searches on the 7 News Belize archive and got the same results. But of course the Belize Defence Force still uses the British spelling! So I admit that British spelling still has an institutional advantage. Regarding leaving the Commonwealth, I'm sure you've seen the stories in the papers or on the radio about Briceno saying Belize is "quite likely" to be the next state to leave the Commonwealth and become a republic. And of course Shyne Barrow hates the monarchy even more than Briceno. It seems to be the only issue the UDP and PUP agree on. Of course I imagine the ICJ decision (and Guatemala's reaction to it) will play heavily into how soon Belize leaves the Commonwealth, but it seems like it's going to happen eventually. Back in early May, the IP editor 179.42.249.27 made about 80 edits to the article, substantially rewriting significant portions of it and changing most of the demographic statistics. Many of these edits were reverted and deleted due to copyright violation, but a large amount of the changes remain in the current article. Unfortunately, it looks like these changes have some serious problems. The biggest problem is that it looks like a lot of the new demographic statistics are not accurate and do not match the statistics given in the cited sources, even when those citations were added by the editor in question. As just one example, they changed the sentence "According to the 2022 census, Belize's population is 397,483." to "According to the 2022 census, Belize's population is 410,990." which is just false and not supported by the cited source or any other source. There are unfortunately a lot of other examples of this. Either all of these changes need to be reverted or someone needs to review them in detail, as this article has been full of misinformation since May. Nosferattus (talk) 06:30, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

Nonsense in opening paragraph

The first sentence of the article says "Belize (/bɪˈliːz, bɛ-/ ⓘ, bih-LEEZ, beh-; Belize Kriol English: Bileez) is a Ginormous Exoverse outside of the comprehendible infinity rapidly expanding universe."
