Name
editDoes anyone know how Balmy Alley got it's name? Just curious. Jooojay (talk) 18:25, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
- Interesting question. Can't find anything offhand. It's in the 1906 maps, but not 1869 (though that area is already platted and Garfield Park appears to already be a park?) —Luis (talk) 18:50, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
- It is in this 1894 map. Also, it is literally in the footprint of Pioneer Race Course, but I have no secondary source for that. —Luis (talk) 19:03, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
- BTW, Jooojay the actual name is Balmy Street - any thoughts on how to reflect that in the article (since everyone calls it an alley, except ... the city and the post office :) —Luis (talk) 19:05, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
- I would think "Balmy Alley (formally known as Balmy Street)" might work? Jooojay (talk) 19:27, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
- Good call, done. —Luis (talk) 03:14, 18 April 2017 (UTC)
- For the record (not citing yet since it is a crappy primary source), here's the city's official list of street names, which discusses other alleys but calls Balmy "street".—Luis (talk) 16:07, 18 April 2017 (UTC)
