Olympedia

edit

I have tagged the Olympedia article, which we cite as a source, with [better source needed]. Do we trust that online encyclopedia? Their articles have no sources whatsoever. For claims like Lynn Davies' erroneous elimination after the third jump (which I also marked as needing a citation), Olympedia is the only reference I can find online that's not apparently based on the Wikipedia article. Reliable sources like [1] and [2] don't mention that incident. Our article about Lynn Davies doesn't mention it either, even though it sounds like what amounts to a voluntary withdrawal from an Olympic final would be a pretty relevant fact.

Davies' second-best jump was clearly worse than that of the other athlete, which I would have thought would break the tie. That's my understanding of how that rule works today anyway. Does anyone have the rules for the 1968 event at hand? Renerpho (talk) 23:30, 18 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Renerpho: Olympedia is considered RS. Hey man im josh (talk) 23:51, 18 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Hey man im josh: Thanks! I see it at Sports Reference#Olympics now. I guess that can be used then. I'm still curious about that old rule leading to the alleged mistake. Since the elimination sounds justified by modern rules (where ties are broken by second-best results), I think we should add a footnote here explaining the difference.
Also, do you think it's worth adding a mention of this to our Lynn Davies article? Renerpho (talk) 23:56, 18 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Just because they're RS doesn't mean they're perfect, right? It couldn't hurt to include a relevant footnote, sounds like useful information. The IOC keeps records for this stuff and creates looooong post games recaps which I've found when working on Olympics lists I was getting to featured list status. Unfortunately, they weren't always the easiest and most obvious to find though. Perhaps @Arconning, who worked on the 1968 list might have a good source for this info? From my understanding, voluntary withdrawals from an Olympic event is pretty normal... So I wouldn't expect for much info of it to be publicized. Olympedia is probably the best source for this since they were made up of historians that extensively research about the Olympic Games, so yeah add it! Go for it!
