"The much-maligned Festival Plaza"
editHey, so I've actually never commented on a wikipedia page before, but I really love the old Festival Plaza design, and I was looking up pictures of it just now and was really surprised at how negative this page is about it. I guess the author is not a fan, which is fair enough, but it had its supporters! Public art can be a bit divisive like that I guess.
Because the old plaza has been demolished and a new one is currently being built, it's getting pretty hard to actually find any information about it now - searching for "Adelaide Festival Plaza" mostly just brings up government plans about the new site. I am not a writer, but I think it would be worth having a separate article or at least section on this page about the old plaza and would love to encourage that.
Here's an interesting article from a local paper: https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/removal-of-hajeks-sculptures-from-adelaide-festival-centre-plaza-grows-more-likely/news-story/815c57e664f3ff003015f61ea235e0bb
And here's one from an art magazine I found online: https://www.artlink.com.au/articles/4113/the-vandalisation-of-art-28de29commissioning-art-in-/
Here's a good picture from a postcard: https://www.researchgate.net/figure/City-Sign-Olga-Lodge-Fountain-and-Southern-Plaza-Adelaide-Festival-Centre-Adelaide_fig7_267098823 (Unsigned, TerryCavanagh, 15 April 2021)
- TerryCavanagh, I have updated the section considerably and have added a redirect to the Construction section. (Making a separate section doesn't really fit into the chronological history very well, plus the various parts of the plaza have been named different things by different sources at different times.) Btw "much-maligned" kind of implies that the owner of the opinion doesn't agree with the maligning, but I have taken out that wording anyway. The wording did not, or should not, reflect the opinion of the editor, but the sources - every opinion is cited. Pretty much all sources say that opinions differed widely, so this is reflected in the article still, but I have also added some of the praise and positive opinions. (Then got sidetracked into the architects.) Also btw, even if you are not a registered editor, you are welcome to contribute to talk pages, but please remember to sign your name using 4 tildes (~), which automatically shows IP address, date and time.
