Name

edit

The official name is apparently "AIBO", but common usage seems split between that and "Aibo", so it's not obvious which is right. Does anybody have insights on the distinction? Stan

imho AIBO should be the right one as it's the usage seen on every SONY printed document. User:jimqode

I've been bold and moved it to AIBO. Sony calls it that way. Mushroom 14:11, 26 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Good ... AIBO is a sort of acronym for Artificial Intelligence roBOt, and as all acronyms should be spelled all U/C. SONY provided this explanation in every user guide and in many marketing materials, and the only way SONY printed the word AIBO was AIBO.

Ethics

edit

May I suggest a section in this article on the ethics/philosophy/sociology perspectives on this robot? I have never seen or interacted with one but from the description it seems almost as 'alive' as some pets. Any specific critiques of AIBO would be interesting. Alternatively, a link to a relevant article on this subject would be useful. A brief comparison (and link to) Tamagotchi or reference to 'cyber-pets' would also be good. --ChrisJMoor 02:26, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

There are also studies that have been done with AIBO robots in settings such as senior citizen communities, where it therapeutic benefits of interaction with the pets were investigated.

Development of

edit

There is a lot of development and philosophy that went into the creation of the AIBO to make it the most appealing to people, and easy to bond with. Some information about the design process, the philosophy behind the project, could be added. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.62.227.42 (talk) 01:34, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Stereoscopy?

edit

I removed the mention of stereoscopy - all the AIBOs I've had have only had one camera, thus precluding stereoscopic imaging.

Which AIBO?

edit

I am working on a website that will explain the different models of AIBO to people. I am constantly being asked which is the best to get?

I agree with ChrisJMoore that it is difficult ot get a perspective on which is the best unless you have specifically interacted with one and know what they are capable of. I will post a link to the specific page when it is complete.

AIBO scrapped

edit

Something should be mentioned with regards to Aibo being scrapped by Sony.

Why was AIBO discontinued?

edit

Isn't there any information available why AIBO was discontinued? I always thought they made a lot of money since the robots were quickly outsold. Ran4 (talk) 19:55, 24 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Convention?

edit

Nearly all google roads seem to lead to this article. I've searched and removed results that contain phrases that are unlikely to appear anywhere but Wikipedia mirrors:

"aibo convention" -"called honey brown in Japan" -"breed lineage"

+sony +"robotics tower" -"called honey brown in Japan" -"breed lineage"

Can anyone provide a link to verify the actual name of this event its setting?

Wouldn't the MSRP be useful?

edit

These things cost $5000 when they first came out didn't they? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Petzl (talkcontribs) 23:37, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorayama Hajime's design work is a glaring omission from the article

edit

This article doesn't even mention Sorayama Hajime's design work on this, which originated in the 1980s. I understand that the robotics and product/marketing sides are the main interest points for most readers, but that's not all there is to the AIBO story. Sources on this are easy to find [1]. I'd rather work on the artist bio (presently a pile of "Engrish" and poor wikiformatting; the regulars here can handle updating the AIBO article with the design side of its history.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  06:08, 22 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to 3 external links on AIBO. Please take a moment to review my edit. You may add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it, if I keep adding bad data, but formatting bugs should be reported instead. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether, but should be used as a last resort. I made the following changes:

Article cleanup

edit

Started working on cleaning up the history section in my sandbox - mainly improving grammar and finding citations. Planning to add some of the updates to the article in next week or two.Accountmetric (talk) 19:44, 29 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Cleaning article-- worth splitting?

edit

This article is absolutely huge, and hits on certain iterations of the robot more than others (there's a hardware specification chart for the ERS-110, but no other model). Seeing as the last person to attempt this in 2019 was permanently banned, I think it's time to start again! Does anyone else think it might be worth creating new articles for the different AIBO installments, given the depth of their differences? This page will just continue to balloon in size as further development is made with this platform. Asciigarden (talk) 18:00, 28 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Oops, I was mistaken, the hardware chart is separated per model, but it's hard to read. I think this page would benefit a lot from having separate spaces to go into more detail. I started working in my sandbox. Asciigarden (talk) 19:12, 28 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
