Name

edit

I thought of a good name for 2002 VE68. 498663 Suadela, named after Suadela (goddess of romance, associated with Venus). I was thinking of Neith, but an asteroid already has that name. The reason I chose Venus-related goddes is because this is as close as were going to get to a Venusian moon. — Hurricane Devon ( Talk ) 18:26, 14 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Another proposed name exists as described in the 2024-Jan-26 Radiolab podcast episode. Zoozve is based on a mis-reading of the original name 2002 VE. [1]Iggynelix (talk) 20:51, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Iseult: It seems entirely appropriate to me that the article mentions "Zoozve" and the Radiolab episode in the context of the name of 2002 VE68. There's no need to entirely remove mention of it as was done in some edits. Something like "Alex Foster mis-spelled the provisional designation '2002 VE' as 'Zoozve' on a poster", and then citing the Radiolab episode is my preferred solution. The idea is not to make a claim that "Zoozve" is currently (or will be) the name of the object, just that "Zoozve" is an interesting aspect of non-techical coverage of 2002 VE68 and quasi-moons. I think that, right now, "Zoozve" has more legimity than other options, like Suadela or Neith. --Dariodemh (talk) 22:48, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Sanpitch: I think your ping was malformed; I found this only while browsing this talk page. That said, this has nothing to do with technical coverage; so long as there is no use of Zoozve in substantial media coverage or in official use, we can't use it on this article per policy with regards to treating it as an officially proposed name.I am, though, satisfied with the current article treatment. @Iggynelix: would you mind explaining why you're resurrecting an 18-year-old thread? As for you and @Dariodemh: I think you're fundamentally misunderstanding what this forum is; it's not for proposing new names. This is a descriptive article on a descriptive site with no power to determine official or semiofficial designations. Iseult Δx parlez moi 03:05, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Well, Zoozve is now official. (Though I would have preferred Hurricane Devon's idea.) Double sharp (talk) 08:21, 7 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

There's a thread on Twitter by Latif Nasser (@latifnasser) about the Zoozve name, dated 26 January 2024. Could this be used as a source, along with the podcast? Link here. Mateussf (talk) 15:26, 18 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Why is it "temporary"

edit

The article mentions that it is a temporary quasi satellite of Venus, but it's not clear why or what temporary means. Or where to find out more about how temporary is being used here.

@Ahlfi006
Hi,
The paper "On the dynamical evolution of 2002 VE68", in the sources, brings some answers to this.
I agree that it'd be nice to summarize them in this article, I'd love to do that eventually.
Basically the asteroid will switch between other resonant states : from what I understand it will stay in 1:1 mean motion resonance, like now, but not as a quasi-satellite any more. For example, horseshoe-like, or trojan. LazyAssed Contender (talk) 14:14, 30 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
