Certainty of Qualification and Elimination

As of December 30, 2024, we cannot be certain of the qualification of South Africa and the elimination of New Zealand, England and Pakistan yet. Since over rate deductions are a thing, teams can theoretically lose any number of points so long as they have matches left to play.

No team can be guaranteed of elimination until they can no longer better the percentages of at least two other teams that have already completed all their matches. By this idea, only Bangladesh and West Indies should be marked as eliminated, as they cannot better the percentages of New Zealand and England (who have finished all their matches). Similarly, no team can be guaranteed of qualification until they have finished all their games and no more than one team can match or better their percentage.

Although the ICC have already announced South Africa as finalists (on December 29, 2024), I believe the declaration is premature and does not stand up to mathematical rigour. South Africa have one more test to play against Pakistan. Hypothetically, if South Africa lose that test and are docked 9 points for slow over-rates, and if India draw 2-2 in Australia and Australia win 2-0 in Sri Lanka (without any points deductions in either series), South Africa would end up finishing third behind Australia and India!

Even if the above scenario is extremely unlikely, it cannot be entirely discounted, right? Qualification and elimination cannot be conditional on the non-occurrence of low-probability tournament outcomes. They didn't follow this. Today SL and NZ tied with percentage(50). Followed by series wins 1,1. Followed by away wins(SL-100, NZ-50). But NZ is top in the league table. 2406:7400:51:ED45:D1B9:4385:447B:9FEE (talk) 14:25, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
