University of Edinburgh assignment - Global Health Challenges Pg Online
editDear all, this is just to flag up that several students on the Global Health Challenges Pg Online course will be researching and improving (in groups) approximately seven stub articles related to WikiProject Disaster management this month. Namely:
- 2024 Western megafires
- 1983 famine in Ghana
- 2016-17 Zimbabwe floods
- 2021 Atami landslide
- 2005 Kashmir earthquake
- 1988 Nepal earthquake
- 1976 Manfredonia accidental release of arsenic
So if you see a flurry of activity on these pages in the coming days then don't worry it is not an attack it is just new student editors trying to help improve and expand these articles using their research. If possible please avoid reverts and provide constructive criticism to help the students learn where they be going wrong whether it is wording, style guidelines or formatting or the types of sources being used etc. Hopefully any issues should be minor in natuure but any problems or questions, please ask! Thanks, Stinglehammer Stinglehammer (talk) 17:17, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
Assignment completion this week
editThis article is/was the subject of an Outreach Programs & Events Dashboard-supported course assignment in Autumn 2024. Further details are available on the course page. Assigned student editor(s): JaneIreland1. This Global Health Challenges Pg Online (University of Edinburgh) assignment challenges students to improve stub articles about natural and manmade disasters as part of a group research project. As these are new editors, please provide constructive feedback so they can learn and improve and if anything needs rewritten please can you afford them the chance to do so. |
Geo-technical impact
editHi, I wonder if someone could take a look and see if this section could be re-added with revisions? Stinglehammer (talk) 11:49, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
Geo-technical Impact
editGround fissures can cause damage to buildings, utility infrastructures and impede disaster management efforts.[1] Ground fissuring was a prominent feature in the Terai plains and mountains.[2]
Soil liquefaction, evidenced as ground oscillations and sand boils resulted in sand clogging of dug, tube and boring wells in the Terai plains and the districts of Dhanusha and Siraha, causing scarcity of drinking water and irrigation resources.[2]
Landslides triggered by the earthquake were exhibited by slumps in thick soil, debris, rock flow, and avalanche in the regions of the earthquake epicentre, and the landslide prone regions of Sindhuli, Udaypur and Bhojpur.[2] Extensive damage and destruction were caused by the earthquake triggered landslides in these regions, including damage to roads.[3] Stinglehammer (talk) 11:49, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
Pre-cleanup article review for improvement
edit@Stinglehammer as mentioned in my talk page these are my comments for the revision last edited by student here:
Lede & infobox
- "Which is why it is also known as the Udayapur earthquake." unnecessary, we don't discuss names like this.
- "The earthquake hit a magnitude of", an earthquake doesn't "hit". The line afterwards as well.
- "Since then, Nepal has been devastated by a 7.8Mw earthquake in April 2015, also known as the Gorkha earthquake, which claimed the lives of over 9000 people.", I'm not sure why this one is relevant, and please use a thousand separator (9000 > 9,000, 1003 > 1,003) to distinguish from years.
- Infobox does not need a map of Nepal
- All references must be added after the period mark closes a sentence, there shouldn't be any spacing between each ref template.
- The table on casualties could be brought down to a section that discusses human impact
Headers All section headers are sentence case
Geographical and physical impact
- "The widespread destruction and causalities from the 1988 Nepal-Bihar earthquake can be attributed to the region's geology and geo-technical damage," avoid repeating the event name, readers know this article discusses this specific event. If you're mentioning another event, then it's fine to refer with a name.
Geo-technical impact
- Needs to be in paragraph form, do not bold the prose
- "Ground fissures can cause damage to buildings, utility infrastructures and impede disaster management efforts" this statement is too generalised, bring examples about the kind of damage from this earthquake
Infrastructure damage
- "In addition to the magnitude of earthquakes, the local geology and the building techniques also affect the extent of damage and devastation." avoid generalised statements
- This section is generally fine and I don't have any problems, the kind of editorial standard expected at minimum.
Human vulnerabilities
- "Reports from a Japanese natural disaster study group" when, who, which publication?
- "due to their reduced ability to escape from the physical impact of the disaster" this is too broad to be understood, what physical impact?
- "In the aftermath of 1988 Nepal earthquakes" > "In the aftermath"
- "They also highlighted the plight of pregnant ladies in labour", what was the plight?
- "The earthquake struck at the non -school going hours, preventing causalities", didn't the earthquake kill 1,003 people? Specify.
Local response and International response
- "Following the 1988 earthquake" delete
- Some sentences missing period mark, citations added before the mark, should be after
- "The committee also set up the Central Earthquake Relief and Reconstruction Fund, which raised $1.3 million USD from local institutions and individuals." unreferenced
Short- and longer-term health consequences
- "Although it was not possible to find a mental health paper related to the 1988 earthquake, there is a study on adult survivors of the 2015 Nepal earthquake, post-traumatic stress disorder, and coping Strategies in adult survivors of the post-earthquake." this is not acceptable in an encyclopedia, Wikipedia is not a journal for personal research projects.
- Also, this content discusses the 2015 earthquake so why is it here?
- "The 1988 earthquake in Nepal caused significant loss of life and property. The earthquake resulted in 709 deaths and at least 1,016 injuries, affecting about 300,000 people." it's reiterated before so this is redundant, and why has the casualties dropped to 700?
- "The immediate aftermath of the earthquake saw a surge in injuries due to the collapse of buildings and other structures." why is that so?
- This section is fragmented by too many subheaders
- "percent" and "%" are used interchangably. please stick to one.
- "Long-term impacts on physical health include chronic diseases resulting from untreated injuries and the ongoing risk of infectious diseases due to compromised healthcare systems and living conditions." needs to be specific
Lessons emerged from this disaster
- "In the event of a natural disaster, having a well-organised cadre of medical and paramedical personnel can effectively respond to many casualties caused by an earthquake before the arrival of medical reinforcements", make this specific to the article's context
- The sentence afterwards uncited
- "In the aftermath of the earthquake, international rescue organisations and volunteer teams played an important supporting role. This shows that in resource-poor developing countries, international assistance and transnational cooperation are very important and can greatly enhance the efficiency and quality of disaster relief." again, we don't want generalised statements
- "and in the 1990s, the National Building Code of Nepal (NBC) was developed", we do not link an external url like this. There's no need for an abbreviation if NBC isn't used elsewhere.
- Content under "Infrastructure" subhead, again with generalised statements
- Paragraph afterwards uncited
- "After the 1988 Nepal earthquake, several Emergency Disaster Risk Reduction (EDRR) programmes were implemented in Nepal." How?
- "These programmes have helped to raise awareness of the risks, and instead of ignoring seismic hazards fatalistically or as ‘acts of God’ as in the past, earthquakes are increasingly seen as preventable and mitigable disasters." delete
- Subhead "Emergency Response Training" uncited
