"Push 2 Start" hit number one the next week, marking the first time a solo act replaced themselves at number one and made her the second artist ever to achieve the feat after Tems. Additionally it made her the first solo female artist with two number-one songs on the chart and the second artist ever with at least two number-one songs after Tems.[5].
Background and composition
editTyla stated she simply could not move on after making "Push 2 Start" and wanted to include it on her deluxe album Tyla+ along with other songs, such as the amapiano song "Shake Ah" and contemporary R&B song "Back to You", all three were included on the deluxe album. "Push 2 Start" is a reggae-infused Afropop and amapiano-R&B song that focuses on Tyla imploring her partner to give her affection.[6][7][3][1][8][9]
Music video
editThe music video directed by Aerin Moreno premiered on 8 November 2024 (SAST) and garnered nearly 4 million views within a week.[12][8] The video is set at a car wash where Tyla dances with back up dancers near a vibrant backdrop. Later she spray paints herself similar to how a car would be painted and dances on a car carrier as the video concludes.[13] Several critics compared the visuals of the music video to the likes of other female artists, most notably Rihanna and Beyoncé, pointing out similar scenes from the music videos for their songs and "Shut Up and Drive" and "Crazy in Love", emphasizing the 2000s pop and R&B music video vibe.[14][15][16] Tyla also wears heels inspired by Rihanna in the music video.[17]
Live performances
editTyla performed a medley of "Water" and "Push 2 Start" in Brooklyn Navy Yard, New York City on 15 October 2024, at the 2024 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show,[18][19] and again in Co-op Live, Manchester, United Kingdom on 10 November, at the 30th Annual MTV Europe Music Awards.[20]
