The U.S. Naval Academy and University of Utah football teams compete in the annual San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California. More than 1,200 midshipmen traveled from the East Coast to show support for their team, which was defeated by the Utes, 37-35.

Bennie Owen was the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners football team from 1905 to 1926. Credited with introducing the forward pass to football in the American Southwest, Owen was a charter member of the College Football Hall of Fame upon its founding in 1951.
