Lucy Mary Cavanagh (1871–1936) was an American botanist and plant collector, noted for her identification of several species of bryophytes.[1][2][3] The standard author abbreviation Cavanagh is used to indicate this person as the author when citing a botanical name.[4]She was born April 17, 1871, in Iowa City and died in Clinton County, Iowa, US.[5]
Education and career
editLucy Mary Cavanagh graduated the University of Iowa in 1896 with a Bachelors of Science degree. While working on her degree, she taught in Iowa City public schools. In 1902 she became an associate member of the Iowa Academy of Science and continued membership until her death. She became Herbarium Assistant in Botany at Iowa state University in 1907. In 1911, she became Assistant Curator of the Herbarium, holding that position until her death. [3][5]

In 1902 Ms. Cavanagh became the herbarium assistant at the University of Iowa (Paris 1937) and was subsequently named assistant curator in 1911. She served as an assistant to Bohumil Shimek in plant taxonomy at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory (State University of Iowa 1911) and continued her herbarium work at the University of Iowa until her death in 1936 (Lewis 2006). Ms. Cavanagh was a bryologist and, though she did some collecting in Idaho and Montana, her botanical interests focused on the mosses of Iowa (Cavanagh 1919, 1929, 1929-1931). She was a member of the Sullivant Moss Society and the Iowa Academy of Science (Paris 1937).
