Premise
editErnest Cole exposes the horror of Apartheid through photographs, which resulted in him fleeing to the United States. In 2017, 60,000 negatives of his work were found in a Swedish bank safe.[4]
Production
editIn May 2023, it was announced Raoul Peck would direct a documentary revolving around Ernest Cole, with Magnolia Pictures set to distribute in the United States. The documentary is produced in collaboration with the Cole estate, and access to his archive.[5][6] In February 2024, it was announced LaKeith Stanfield would voice Cole.[7]

editIt had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in the Special Screenings section on May 20, 2024.[8][9] It was released in the United States on November 22, 2024,[10] and will be released in France on December 25, 2024.[11]

editOn the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 95% of 21 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.1/10.[12] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 83 out of 100, based on 7 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".[13]
