Production

edit

It was announced in September 2017 that Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot Productions had acquired the rights to the 2016 film, and were developing the remake, to be done in live action, with the original's studio Toho. J. J. Abrams and Genki Kawamura were set to produce, and Eric Heisserer was hired to write the screenplay.[2] In February 2019, Marc Webb was hired to direct.[1] In January 2020, the original film's director/writer, Makoto Shinkai, revealed that Abrams sent him the remake's script for his approval.[3]

In September 2020, it was announced that Lee Isaac Chung was now directing the film, and was writing off a new draft from Emily V. Gordon.[4] In April 2021, Chung stated how he hoped to begin filming later in the same year.[5] However, in July, Chung exited the film due to scheduling conflicts.[6]

In October 2022, Carlos López Estrada was hired to direct the film in addition to rewriting the script.[7] In October 2023, producer Genki Kawamura revealed he was working on the script with Estrada. He cited the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike as reasons for why the project had slowed down in development.[8]
