The Polish Neurological Society (PTN) is a Polish scientific society established on 14th September 1933 at the Congress of Natural Scientists and Physicians in Poznań. The initiators of the establishment of the Society were, inter alia, Edward Flatau, Samuel Goldflam and Józef Babiński, who, however, died before the establishment of the PNS. The first president of the PNS was Prof. Kazimierz Orzechowski, head of the Department of Neurology in Warsaw. The Polish Neurological Society is one of the oldest neurological societies in the world. In 2023, the Society's 90th anniversary was celebrated.
According to the Statute of PTN, the aims of the Society are:
• supporting the development of science in the field of neuroscience and related branches of science;
• representing Polish neurology in Poland and abroad;
• dissemination of scientific achievements among neurologists and physicians of other specialties;
• postgraduate training of physicians in the field of diseases of the nervous system;
• contributing to shaping the healthcare model;
• promoting the principles of professional ethics and ensuring that they are respected;
• representing the interests and protection of the rights of the members associated in the Society.
The Society pursues its aims, inter alia, through:
• developing and publishing its own scientific and educational journals, as well as conducting other publishing activities in the field of neurology;
• organizing conventions, conferences and other scientific and training meetings;
• announcing and organizing competitions for the study of major issues in the field of neurology and awarding prizes for scientific achievements;
• cooperation with institutions responsible for the organization and financing of healthcare, specialist supervision in the field of neurology, the Polish Academy of Sciences, Chambers of Physicians and non-governmental scientific organizations in Poland and abroad;
• establishing and maintaining foreign contacts with scientific organizations;
• preparing and issuing opinions on scientific, organizational and professional matters related to neurology;
• conducting popularization activities in the field of prevention and treatment of diseases of the nervous system;
• cooperation with state and local government administration. In 2024, the Polish Neurological Society has about 2 thousand members who take an active part in creating and issuing opinions on standards for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases and training medical staff in neurology.
The Polish Neurological Society is a member of:

Educating the public:
Educational activities are a very important element of the functioning of the Polish Neurological Society. PTN conducts extensive social education on neurological diseases – causes, diagnostics and methods of treatment through its social media – Facebook and X (Twitter) profiles. It is estimated that about 5 million people in Poland suffer from diseases of the nervous system and this number is growing every year, which is why it is so necessary to spread awareness about them.
Activities for physicians:
One of the aims of the Polish Neurological Society is to educate physicians and support scientific excellence by:
• publishing scientific journals "Neurologia Neurochirurgia Polska" and "Polish Neurological Review";
• creating two websites: www.neuroedu.pl and www.ptneuro.pl;
• distribution of the Neurokurier, i.e. a newsletter with information from the life of PTN, news from the world of science, recommended articles and lectures from PTN magazines and websites;
• organization of the School of Young Neurologists (autumn and spring editions);
• funding scholarships for participation in congresses of the European Academy of Neurology and for foreign educational and scientific trips.
Activities for journalists:
Since 2023, the Polish Neurological Society has been organizing the SUPERneuron competition for journalists, the aim of which is to highlight the role of journalists in educating the public about neurological diseases and the organization of neurological care. The competition jury consists of the Main Board of the Polish Neurological Society.
