Liam McCay, known commonly as sign crushes motorist is an Irish slowcore artist best known for his projects Take Care and sign crushes motorist.[1] His debut album i'll be okay and it's follow up Hurting went viral after users on TikTok shared it.[1]
Early life and career
editMcCay was born in Galway University Hospital in Galway, Ireland on February 28th, 2005. He moved to Buncrana when he was 8 weeks old. He grew up playing the fiddle and listening to artists like Simon & Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen, and Tom Waits.[2]
McCay took inspiration in his music from Duster and Apistat Commander. He got the name sign crushes motorist from the title of a Duster song.[3]
2022: i'll be okay and Birth Day
editMcCay released Boyhood, an album under the project name Birth Day on June 10, 2022.[4]
McCay released i'll be okay, his first album under the sign crushes motorist moniker, on August 5th, 2022.[5]
2023: Hurting and Accept
editThe second album on the project sign crushes motorist Hurting, was released June 30, 2023.[6] When talking about Hurting, McCay said:[1]
“This album was made while I was going through possibly the worst time of my life mentally, and it took a lot of self motivation to even get out of bed, let alone write and record stuff. I hope you enjoy these ten songs, and if you’re feeling as bad as I was while recording them, just know that it can’t last forever. Every one of you have a lot left to give, and if you’re feeling suicidal, please just hang in there for a little while longer. As they say, the darkest hour comes just before the dawn. I thank all of you for listening to my music and for supporting me, and I hope you like the album.”
McCay started a new project titled Dead Calm and released a full length album on September 29, 2023 titled Accept. The album features other slowcore artists, such as someone you can call, widowdusk, Casper Hill, and wratt starr.[7]
McCay announced his first tour in the United States in February 2024, accompanying Olivia O. and performing from all of his projects.
