Laura Christine is an American metal guitarist and a member of the band Dark Angel. Laura is married to Gene Hoglan, drummer (Dethklok, Dark Angel, formerly Testament, Meldrum, Tenet, Anthrax (live), Death, Wargod). [1]
Laura was born on October 10, 1972, and raised in Maryland. [2] She moved to the West Coast at age 13. [3]
Laura initially began playing music in 3rd grade on a recorder and then the flute. She began playing guitar at age 16 and was influenced by bands like Cannibal Corpse, Metallica, Morbid Angel, Megadeth, Slayer and Pantera. [4]
Laura initially played in the band Damnation. [5] Two years after that band ended, in 2000, Laura and bassist Dave Smith, formed Warface, a three person death metal band based out of San Diego. [3][6] In 2006, Warface released its first full-length CD, Insanity of the Obsessed, which Laura also produced. [2] Laura also joined the band Meldrum as a bass player in 2008. [2] Laura continued to record with Meldrum for the album “Lifer”, released in 2012, where she helped record both the bass and guitar parts after Michelle Meldrum, the guitarist and founder of Meldrum, unexpectedly passed away. [6]
In 2016, Laura joined Gene Hoglan, who was playing drums with Zimmers Hole, a Canadian heavy metal band known as a metal parody band.
At the California Death Fest in 2018, Laura was asked to sit in as a guitarist for Dark Angel’s live shows after Jim Durkin, a founding guitarist of Dark Angel, began sitting out live performances for personal reasons. [7][8]
In February 2021, Laura was featured among other musicians, including Jason Becker and Steve Brogden, in Marty Friedman’s video, “Makenaide”.[9]
On March 9, 2023, after friend Jim Durkin of Dark Angel passed away, Laura Christine took his place, as Jim had specifically chosen Laura as his replacement for Dark Angel. [8][10][8]
Since 2022, Laura Cristine and Gene Hoglan were reportedly working on a new project together.[11] In 2024, Laura collaborated with Serj Tankian (System of a Down) and others for a concept album by Bear McCreary (an American composer)’s album Singularity, which is also a graphic novel. [12][13] The album features a plethora of musicians including Slash, Kim Thayil (Soundgarden), Scott Ian (Anthrax), Corey Taylor (Slipknot) and others. [14][15]
In regards to her success as a female metal guitarist, Laura has been quoted as saying, “If you go out there and kick ass, it doesn’t matter if you are female or male.” [16][3]
Laura has also taught guitar in San Diego. [6] She is endorsed by Coffin Case, Dunlop, EMG pickups, GHS strings and KxK Guitars. [17] KxK Guitars also made a signature Laura Christine Warface flying V guitar with a Coffin Case. [18][19]
