Garten of Banban is an episodic, mascot horror video game series created by the Euphoric Brothers,[1] composed of university students Faris and Ghepo.[2] In the game, the player assumes the role of an unnamed parent searching for their missing child in a fictional location called Banban's Kindergarten. The player explores the mysterious establishment, encountering the kindergarten's mascots that have seemingly come to life and developed personalities of their own.[3]
The first game in the series was released in January 2023,[4] releasing on Steam for computers, and later for iOS and Android mobile devices in February to March of 2023. The series has since ballooned with a total of six mainline games and two spin-offs, alongside two planned releases (V and VIII). The game has received mixed to negative reviews for reportedly stealing content from indie horror games with similar plots, such as the Bendy and Poppy Playtime franchises, and alleged predatory merchandising practices; however, each game's reviews have become steadily more positive, with the newer installments giving more "content".
Gameplay
editThe player assumes the role of an unnamed parent searching for their missing child(ren) in the abandoned establishment of Banban's Kindergarten.[3] The monsters, based off of the kindergarten's mascots, can either be helpful, harmful, or neutral. Various notes and videotapes can be found across the game that tells a larger backstory behind the history of the facility.
The player mainly utilizes a drone and keycards in order to solve puzzles and proceed the story.[5] Upon dying in one of many ways, the player is given a random letter before reincarnating at a certain point in the game. These letters can decode into certain phrases, such as "It hurts" and "Monsters".
Plot
editChapter 1
editThe parent arrives at Banban's Kindergarten, a recently shut-down school, in search of their missing child trapped within. Acquiring a drone, they enter the main rooms. Across their search, they find a pink bird known as the Opila Bird, as well as notes and film tapes, suggesting that monsters based off of the kindergarten's mascots caused the humans to go missing, their child included.[6]
Eventually, the Opila Bird attempts to kill the parent, but ultimately falls down an abyss in the kindergarten's "Ball Pit". The parent enters an elevator, only to be stopped by a monstrous Jumbo Josh, a hulking, green gorilla that likes vegetables. Josh derails the elevator, causing himself and the parent to crash into a lower floor.[6]
Chapter 2
editThe parent explores the lower floor, learning about the hidden facility under the kindergarten. A voice explains via the cameras that if the parent helps him escape and defeat Nabnab (a blue, lonely spider), then the voice will help the parent. They do this, only to realize that the voice was Banban, a red devil that craves pancreases, as well as being the kindergarten's main mascot. Banban captures the parent, causing the latter to extract "Givanium (the monsters' blood)" from several clones of Captain Fiddles, a lavender gremlin that communicates via gibberish.[7]
After a meeting with Zolphius (a gray, mutated worm), the parent learns that the Opila Bird is still alive, and is aided by a hostile Banbaleena, a white, cat-like teacher and Banban's love interest. After escaping Banbaleena, Opila Bird, the Opila Chicks(Opila Bird's offspring), and Slow Seline(a yellow snail), the parent reaches Banban, who explains that he wants to help the parent search for their missing child. The parent escapes Banbaleena, Jumbo Josh, Nabnab, and Slow Seline. Jumbo Josh abducts Banbaleena as the parent then descends into the kindergarten's next floor.[7]
Chapter 3
editThe parent, with the aid of Banban, encounters Stinger Flynn(an orange jellyfish with telepathic powers) who tells the parent to give up their search for the survivors, explaining that he has a plan to save them. Banban disagrees, and convinces the player to bring Nabnaleena(a black spider and Nabnab's love interest), to life, in order to prevent Nabnab from causing trouble. Jumbo Josh abducts the latter, while Stinger Flynn captures the parent and hands them to Jumbo Josh.[8]
After escaping Josh's grasp with Banbaleena's aid, the player fights Tamataki and Chamataki (a turquoise turtle-chameleon hybrid) and uses a mannequin-like robot known as Mr. Kabob Man to lure Opila Bird, Tarta Bird(Opila Bird's cyan-colored love interest), and an Opila Chick referred to as "Little Beak", into aiding the parent. Stinger Flynn unleashes a monstrous, hostile Banban onto the four, the former of which giving chase. Jumbo Josh arrives, fighting with the hostile Banban and Stinger Flynn, as well as Opila Bird and Tarta Bird. The latter two trust the parent with Little Beak before being pulled into the fight. The parent and Little Beak go to the next floor via an elevator.[8]
Chapter 4
editAfter arriving at the next floor, the parent and Little Beak are chased by Tamataki and Chamataki before being apprehended by an unnamed assailant. After further interrogation, this unnamed being is revealed to be Sheriff Toadster, a brown sheriff in the form of a frog. It is revealed that he and Queen Bouncelia(a purple, queen kangaroo), are planning to escape the current floor via an elevator leading to the surface. The parent is entrusted to repair the elevator whilst avoiding BitterGiggle, a half-purple, half-green jester that wishes chaos across the current floor.[9]
The parent collects the elevator parts, aided by Banban, Mr. Kabob Man, Sheriff Toadster and Little Beak, whilst avoiding BitterGiggle, Nabnab and Kittysaurus, a dinosaur-cat hybrid and BitterGiggle's "pet". While collecting the last elevator part, BitterGiggle and Kittysaurus reach Queen Bouncelia, the latter of which laughs, causing her children, gray leeches known as the Naughty Ones, to escape her pouch. Little Beak becomes corrupted with Givanium, transforming into a grotesque monster and fighting Kittysaurus. Sheriff Toadster locates the parent and Stinger Flynn and gets them to the elevator. As it goes down, he explains that in order to contain the Naughty Ones, they must collect Queen Bouncelia's missing scepter.[9]
Chapter 6
editOnce Stinger Flynn, Sheriff Toadster, and the parent arrive at the next floor, the latter two learn that switches must be activated in order to obtain the scepter. The switches are activated with the help of Banban and an apologetic BitterGiggle, while avoiding a monstrous Little Beak, the Naughty Ones and their leader, Sir Dadadoo(a gray leech with purple decorations). Over time, allies are lost(such as Sheriff Toadster and Banbaleena) and gained(such as Nabnab, Kittysaurus, and Stinger Flynn).[10]
Once all the switches are activated, the parent, Banban, BitterGiggle and Nabnab discover that the scepter is incomplete, much to Sir Dadadoo's delight. Him and the Naughty Ones give chase, being slowed down by BitterGiggle and a now-monstrous Nabnab, with no effect. The parent and Banban learn that Sir Dadadoo now has brainwashed and control over certain characters, including Banbaleena, BitterGiggle, and Kittysaurus. Banban fights Sir Dadadoo's army as he instructs the parent to look for "the surgeon" on the next floor.[10]
Chapter 7
editThe parent makes their way through the dark and decrepit parts of the complex, occasionally slowed by "naughtified" versions of previous foes. After entering what looks to be a meat locker, they attempt to confront Syringeon, only to be knocked out and placed in one of his experiments. They escape and manage to gain Syringeon's trust, learning he has the final piece of the scepter, and going on missions around the city to eventually find Jumbo Josh, the only one capable of fighting off Dadadoo's army and fending off the mind control.
Along the way the parent encounters a mutated and naughtified Bittergiggle, who gives chase. The sequence ends with Sheriff Toadster accidentally killing Bittergiggle, further advancing his depression.
Once the parent locates Jumbo Josh's whereabouts, they enter a hardware store to find he is nowhere to be seen, but they do find a dna sample. With it, Syringeon infuses the last piece of the scepter with JJ's dna to lure him into confronting what he would think it a rival Jumbo Josh. This also lures out Dadadoo and his army, who negage in battle with Jumbo Josh, resulting in the green gorilla's victory followed by him eating the scepter, making it explode.
The game ends with the parent and Stinger Flynn sitting in a hospital being debriefed by Syringeon that the naughtified mascots are now find and resting. Before it ends Flynn notices the mural of the "family" on the wall is peeling. The parent peels away BanBan's mural to reveal a blue BanBan with orange, sun-like patterns on his chin and around his eyes. Syringeon then attacks the parent, proclaiming "Never play with the devil. DOCTOR'S ORDERS!"
