The Battle of the Rosinjača forest was fought between the 106th "Osijek" brigade of the Croatian Defence Council (HVO) and SAO Krajina forces on 5 December 1991 during the Croatian War of Independence.
Battle
editPreparations
editOn December 5, 1991, the forces of the JNA and the SAO Krajina set out to conquer the city of Osijek and, with an infantry attack, they directed the strongest penetration through the Rosinjača forest to approach the city from the south.[1] Due to the fact that no major penetration of the Krajina Serb forces was expected in that direction, the positions in the Rosinjača forest were held only by the reinforced forces of the 106th Osijek brigade of the HVO, that included only 16 Croatian soldiers in total.[1]
Course of the battle
editThe battle was uneven, given the more numerous strength of the SAO Krajina forces. In an effort to stop their penetration, every member of the Croatian forces was killed on 5 December in the Rosinjača forest. The Croatian brigade nonetheless managed to halt the advance of the SAO Krajina for a short period, enabling the consolidation of the defense on other approaches to Osijek. Mainly thanks to their resistance, the city was still defended. A total of 26 members of the 106th Osijek HV Brigade were killed in the defense of Osijek.[2]
