Barnwell Lake is a small artificial freshwater lake in Cambridge, UK. The shallow lake, with a perimeter of 0.5km, is situated between Coldham's Common and Stourbridge Common. The lake runs parallel to Coldham Brook along part of its course, but is unconnected outside of semi-regular flooding. 115 species of birds have been recorded within 8km of Barnwell Lake.[1]
The lake was originally a claypit, supplying material for brick and tile works. Active until at least 1901, flooding of the pit resulted in the lake formation, with huts still visible on the lake bottom until 1916 [2]. Handmade brickyards continued to operate on the site until 1930, including Watts and Co, Cambridge Brick Company, Stourbridge Brick Company and Swann’s Brickyard.[2]
