Anna-Kaisa Antti-Roiko (born 21 May 2004) is a Finnish ice hockey player and member of the Finnish national team. She has played in the Auroraliiga (called the Naisten Liiga–NSML until 2024) with Oulun Kärpät since 2019.
Playing career
editAntti-Roiko began ice skating at age two and was playing ice hockey in the youth department of Oulun Kärpät 46 by age four.[1][2] She regularly played pick-up hockey games with her twin elder brothers in the yard of their childhood home when they were young and regards her brothers as significant influences in her decision to pursue ice hockey.[3]
In the youth department of Oulun Kärpät 46, Antti-Roiko often played on teams with Oona Havana and Tilli Keranan, fellow female ice hockey enthusiasts in her age group (players born in 2004 or 2005). They played together on co-ed teams from a young age until the fall of 2011, when Mira Kuisma established a girls' ice hockey program at Oulun Kärpät 46 and they had their first opportunity to play on an all-girls squad.[4]
After a year with the Kärpät girls' program, Antti-Roiko moved to Oulun Kärpät 46 boys' teams for her age group, playing at the AAA and AA levels (highest and second-highest levels; see minor ice hockey for more).[4][5]
At age fifteen, Antti-Roiko began playing with the Kärpät women's representative team in the Naisten Liiga while continuing to play with the Kärpät boys' under-15 teams in the C2 AAA league. Antti-Roiko generated good offensive numbers in both leagues, notching eight points (3+5) in fourteen Naisten Liiga games and twelve points (4+8) in twenty C2 AAA games.[6]
Auroraliiga
editThe 2020–21 season was Antti-Roiko's first season played entirely in the Naisten Liiga. In the preliminaries and regular season combined, she led all Kärpät players in assists, with nineteen, and her 27 points in 28 games ranked second on the team. She elevated her game in the 2021 playoffs, generating four points (1+3) across two games, and was Kärpät's most effective scorer. Her stand-out play was recognized with the Noora Räty Award for best rookie in the league.[7]
– 2023–24 season
- – sustained a leg injury during the 2023 IIHF Women's World Championship, the rehabilitation of which kept her from playing through out the summer and into the fall of 2023[8] and resulted in her starting season on injured reserve[9]
- – missed first ten games of the season but returned to play in mid-October[10]
- – exceeded a point per game average in 23 regular season games (10+14=24) and was point per game in the playoffs (1+2=3)[3]
International play
editAs a junior player with the Finnish national under-18 team, Antti-Roiko participated in the IIHF U18 Women's World Championships in 2020 and 2022.[4] She served as team captain at the 2022 tournament and lead the team to a bronze medal victory.
Antti-Roiko was selected to the senior national team roster for the 2023 IIHF Women's World Championship during 5 to 16 April 2024 in Brampton, Canada. She slotted into the lineup as the fourth line left winger in all seven of Finland’s matches, playing alongside centre Emmi Rakkolainen and right wingers Oona Havana (first three games) and Anni Montonen (remaining four games). None of the four forwards who played on the fourth line recorded any points during the tournament but, of the four, Antti-Roiko recorded the highest average minutes per game, at 8:38, and had the most shots on goal, with six.[11]
– 2023–24 EHT
- – EHT Finals in Liberec[8]
Personal life
editShe has twin elder brothers, Aleksi and Aki-Petteri (born 2001), who play professional ice hockey in the Kärpät system. Aleksi, a centre, is signed with Oulun Kärpät of the Liiga through the 2024–25 season and Aki-Petteri, a winger, played part of the 2023–24 season in the Mestis with Hermes.[12]
Antti-Roiko began attending a joint secondary education program between the Oulu Sub-region Vocational College (Finnish: Oulun seudun ammattiopisto, OSAO) and the Oulu Sub-region Sports Academy (Ouluseutu Urheiluakatemia) in the fall of 2020, which allowed her to structure her studies around her ice hockey training.[1]
