Ana-Paula Correia (born August 28, 1965) is a Professor of Learning Technologies and the Ted and Lois Cyphert Distinguished Professor in the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University. Her work and research interests focus on learning design, educational technology, and human-computer interaction. Themes of her research include online learning and teaching, mobile learning, collaborative learning, and the application of artificial intelligence in education and training.  She currently serves as the Director of the Center on Education and Training for Employment.

Correia received the Best Book Chapter Award from the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT), Division of Distance Learning[1]. This award recognizes an outstanding book chapter in a print or digital book published in English that describes critical theoretical or practical aspects of distance education that can help others involved in distance education or those researching an important aspect of distance education. The "Go Digital Training Collection," an e-learning collection she co-developed with colleagues, received a Bronze Ribbon in the E-Learning Experience category from the International E-Learning Association[2].

Correia has authored two books, including Teaching online simplified: A quick guide for instructors (with Farrah Dina Yusop).[3]

Correia has been a member of the editorial board for Distance Education, a Taylor & Francis publication, since 2012[4]. She also serves as a member of the editorial board for the Revista de Educación de Puerto Rico, published by the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus[5] and EAD em Foco: Revista Científica em Educação a Distância published by the CECIERJ Foundation in Brazil[6].

Biography

Ana-Paula Correia's experiences growing up in Eastern Africa and living, studying, and working across Southern Europe and North America have shaped her global perspective on education and humanity.

Correia received her Bachelor’s in Teaching Biology and Geology from the University of Minho, Portugal. She continued her education there, receiving a master’s in educational technology. In 1999, she moved to the United States to pursue her PhD in instructional systems technology at Indiana University-Bloomington. Along the way, she completed another Master’s in instructional systems technology graduate school and worked as a learning designer for Eli Lilly and Company, a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company.

Correia’s early research investigated the efficacy of the provision of maps on students' ability to search, orientation, and access information in a hypertext-based learning task. The domain used required students to learn about the theory of tectonic plates. The results indicate that the greater use of maps led to less relevant searching behavior and less effective search effort[7]. Correia's doctoral dissertation, titled “Understanding conflict in teamwork: Contributions of a technology-rich environment to conflict management,"[8] looked at how an information and communication technologies (ICT)-rich environment impacts team conflict and conflict management strategies[9].

She completed her PhD in 2005 and joined the faculty of the School of Education (formerly the College of Education and Human Sciences) at Iowa State University, where she developed a research program on online learning and teaching[10], collaborative learning[11], curriculum development in educational technology[12], and human-computer interaction[13]. She subsequently moved to Ohio State University, where she serves as the Director of the Center on Education and Training for Employment.

Correia's research has been funded by several grants from agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH)[14][15] and the National Science Foundation[16].

She has been a visiting scholar at the Portuguese Open University (Universidade Aberta).

Research

Correia's research encompasses four interrelated foci: online learning and teaching, collaborative learning, human-computer interaction, and curriculum development in educational technology. These areas overlap significantly because they are connected to a central underlying theme in her research: learning design[17]. Her research takes place in formal and informal learning contexts, is aimed at different audiences (e.g., learners, teachers, and trainers), and uses diverse strategies (e.g., in-class vs. online) and a plethora of existing and emerging technologies and tools.

At the core of learning design, she has conducted research on nomophobia[13] (fear of being away from one’s smartphone), which has been widely cited[18] and led to the development of the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q)[13]. The questionnaire has been translated and used in similar research in Portugal[19], Turkey, Spain, Italy, China, India, Pakistan, and Indonesia.

Correia’s most recent research focuses on the role of Artificial Intelligence in education and training[20][21]. She emphasizes promoting AI literacy among learners and educators and aims to equip educational communities with the skills and knowledge needed to engage with AI technologies safely and responsibly.
