Qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup for South America will begin in August 2024, with eight teams competing for one direct qualification spot into the final tournament. The runner up will play the bottom side ranked in the 2025 World Rugby Pacific Nations Cup for a second direct place in the final tournament and the loser progressing to the Final Qualification Tournament. The third ranked side will also qualify for a place in the Final Qualification Tournament.[1]

Format
editQualifying will begin with two elimination matches between the bottom four ranked teams in South America; Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru and Venezuela. The first round will consist of a semi final and final format, with based on World Rugby Rankings dictating the semi-final match-ups, with the winners advancing to play each other in the final. The winner of the final, then plays the bottom placed side from Round 2, to advance to the final round of qualification.
Round 2 features Brazil, Chile and Paraguay in a round robin, format. The top two sides advance to round 4, whilst the bottom placed side will play-off against the winner of Round 1 to remain in qualification contention.
Round 4, will see the top two sides from Round 1 and the winner of the Round 1/2 play-off, join Uruguay in the final stage of qualification. This round will be round robin format, with the winner will directly qualifying for the World Cup as Sudamérica Rugby 1. The runner-up will face the bottom ranked side from the final round of the Pacific qualification process in a Sudamérica / Pacific play-off match to qualify for the World Cup. The third placed side, advances to the Final Qualification Tournament.

editThe first round was contested by four teams in a knockout format, which was held in Medellín, Colombia. It saw Colombia (42) play Costa Rica (93) and Venezuela (78) play Peru (80).[2]
