She descended from an Afghan chieftan who settled in Bengal during Mughal rule.[5][6] He served as the Minister of Communications and Agriculture in the government of Hussain Muhammad Ershad.[7]

She joined the public service as a doctor in 1995 after topping the Doctors Civil Service (BCS) examination.
