Possible original numbers

edit

Based mainly on state roads as they existed in 1928, these are possible locations for the missing or out-of-place numbers. There is an obvious clustering pattern, clearest in tree-like parts of the network such as Calvert County.

Note that many of these are simply wild guesses.

In the Cumberland area there are four missing numbers (43 44 46 54) and at least four possible locations for them:

  • the short bit of 38 at Kitzmiller may not have been 38 at first
  • 135, which was at first just a short bit west of Westernport
  • US 220 south of Cumberland
  • current 807 north of Cumberland, but this was part of US 220 by 1929 - if it was always US 220, why the number 395?
  • 59: 68 out of Williamsport
  • 82: 71 north of Taneytown
  • 83: 75 east of Union Bridge
  • 92: one of the pieces of 91??
  • 95: northern piece of 94?
  • 110: 124 south of Laytonsville? 97 north of Olney? why do 107-109 jump around like that?
  • 135 and 136 are out of place, but there don't seem to be any good locations for them
  • 162: may have swapped with US 1 very early on
  • 163 makes more sense than 136; could 136 have been born as a typo?
  • 164: 24 north of 165 (24 initially turned northeast to Pylesville and Whiteford)
  • 1928 map shows (proposed) 178 hitting US 50 farther west, with the already-constructed road southeast of Iglehart as a separate spur, but these were probably combined before numbers were assigned
  • 185: 97 south of Norbeck? 320?
  • 204 is slightly out of place; was it assigned to the loop north of 203? but then what was the number for 204?
  • 215, 216, 217: a bit out of place; may have been on 337, 381, 382, but then what were 215-217 numbered and why did the numbers move?
  • 247: almost certainly 235 east of Jarboesville
  • 270: 276 at Port Deposit
  • 275: 269 east of Colora
  • 281: 310? 282 east of Cecilton?
  • 287: 310?
  • 310: 404? or was it all 303?
  • 316: 454??
  • 320: west piece of 319?
  • 321, 322, 323, 325, 326, 327, 337, 338: 385; what else?
  • 330: one piece of 333?
  • 339: 16 west of Cambridge
  • 341: Vienna-Rhodesdale (not part of US 213 until 1930-1933)
  • 345: one piece of 347
  • 370: 354 near Snow Hill
  • 372, 373: no idea

The clustering may have ended with 378.
