Nascar Racing box scans?

You can add them - it's more of a question for the video game WikiProject. Make sure that you have a robust fair use rationale or else they'll get deleted. Video game covers are considered Cover Art as far as that guideline is concerned. Royalbroil 03:53, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Kansas's Cup Race is now called Camping World RV 400 also

Well, Kansas Speedway has just announced their sponsor for this years cup race. Per http://www.kansasspeedway.com/549209.html. We seem to have a problem as Dover Speedway also has the same race name. The only thing that differences the names of the two races are the subsponser in which Dover Speedway's Race is called Camping World RV 400 presented by AAA and Kansas Speedway's Race is called Camping World RV 400 presented by Coleman. Also another problem is the 2 races are back to back on the cup schedule which makes it even more confusing. My idea is to create a disambig page at Camping World RV 400 and move Kansas 400 to Camping World RV 400 (Kansas) or Camping World RV 400 presented by Coleman and move Camping World RV 400 to Camping World RV 400 (Dover) or Camping World RV 400 presented by AAA. Hmm, good question. My thoughts are: 1) create disambiguation page at Camping World RV 400, 2) move articles to Camping World RV 400 (Dover) and Camping World RV 400 (Kansas) and create redirects to them from Camping World RV 400 presented by AAA and Camping World RV 400 presented by Coleman. Adding a Number History?

What do you think about adding a number history system for each number in NASCAR. Each car number gets a page and you write out the history of the humber. The issue date, driver info, team info. Oppose. In the early days of NASCAR, each race often saw a different driver using the number. History would be impossible to combine in a meaningful fashion. Royalbroil 20:16, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

wrong info about Joey Logano

The Joey Logano page says he is racing in five upcoming Sprint Cup races. According to ESPN, and many other sources, he will be racing in seven events. http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/nascar/cup/news/story?id=3556642

Actually if you read it correctly it says he will drive 5 races for Hall of Fame Racing.

"On August 28, 2008, Hall of Fame Racing announced that Logano would drive five races in their #96 car during the 2008 Sprint Cup Series." Hope that helps.-KaseyKahneFan 23:03, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Removal of year links

You may have noticed that Lightbot is converting links like this: [[1989 in NASCAR|1989]] to plaintext, e.g. this edit. Am I right in thinking that consensus is that these links should not be removed? (I have asked the bot's owner to stop the bot from removing them, but I'm anticipating that they may ask for justification for my request). DH85868993 (talk) 09:57, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

I agree; I think the year links should stand. Some Wikipedia pages end up being "orphaned" because too few other articles link to it. However, something like "1995 in NASCAR" should be avoided; a particular series should be specified. George Atkinson Jr nominated for deletion

I nominated the George Atkinson Jr article for deletion. He races a late model at a NASCAR-sanctioned track in California and at the Bullring in Las Vegas. He's a local-level racer, not a national-level racer with no touring series starts listed. He's around 15th in points at Irwindale at the track's highest division. The article has conflict of interest issues from its originator. You can give your opinion on the deletion discussion by following the AFD link on the top of the article. 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series

Can some interested editors please review the newly created article 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series? A series of new editors has created most of the content and something doesn't quite feel right to me regarding the Teams list. Red Bulls

Hi all. user:Cvinne has just moved Red Bull Racing (the F1 team article) to Red Bull Racing (Formula One) and (I think) Team Red Bull (the NASCAR team) to Red Bull Racing Team (NASCAR). Probably quite logical, but I don't think it's been discussed, so I thought I should bring it up here for a project-wide view. Also, would anyone like to volunteer to get a bot to sort out all the links. I know redirects will take care of it, but that gets very messy if things change again in future. 2009 Daytona 500 entry list

Why is it unacceptable to post an entry list for the Daytona 500? I did so a few months ago and it was deemed as "vandalism" (which is only opinion). Organisers of Wikipedia pages for other forms of racing actually ENCOURAGE this sort of extra help. 97.125.21.179 (talk) 06:10, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

I agree it wasn't vandalism. Several months ago I would consider it to be ill-advised as Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. Now that it's getting closer, I can see adding the section as long as you can find a reliable source to back you up. Royalbroil 06:50, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

My main news source for NASCAR news is Jayski.com. "Jayski" seems to be quite reliable, not branding a rumor as fact unless an official press release or a team's website confirms something. He usually has news stories that are deeper than at SPEEDtv.com or ESPN.com, but I'm not sure that some of the self-appointed Wikipedia "Gestapos" would agree. However, since YOU are registered they may respond better if you posted an entry list or a link to Jayski's list.

I mis-spoke when I said I had posted an entry list several months ago. I actually posted a list of past Daytona 500 winners and Cup champions who would compete or who may compete (doing the same on the 2009 Indianapolis 500 page), and showing whether or not they were exempt from the Top 35 rule (it can be seen in the page's history, with 3 or 4 reversions). An entry list is a very time consuming thing to do! I don't want to spend my time on it - I see lots of articles that I'd rather start instead. There's lots of admin things that I could be doing like taking care of speedy deletions. Some of them are really bad vandalism or attack articles. How about you create the entry list and let me know if someone removes it. Please provide a link on the first entry to your reference - Jayski should be fine in my opinion. I just posted my list in the 2009 Gatorade Duels page (the Daytona 500 page has quite a bit of content now). Now that qualifying is less than two weeks away, it seems like a good time to post an entry list (at least tentative). It also comes with a link to Jayski's site, listed as the source. NASCAR Lore

I'm starting a NASCAR lore page....much in the same grain as the NFL lore. First and foremost it's populated with the widely regarded and accepted "great moments" (races). Future sections could include famous machines and figures, but I think it should shy away from the great drivers. Otherwise it'll be too long. If there are rules named after drivers, or policies named after an incident, those could qualify too.

The I think there should be some scrutiny before adding "great" races and "honorable mention." The NFL lore page had the same problem. People would be adding a game the next day because they thought it was good, but it nowhere near made sense to consider it "lore" yet. Just because they have a close finish, doesn't immediately mean the race was 'great.'

There are plenty of magazine/newspaper/internet articles listing the accepted great race, and as time goes by, more and more references/citations will and should be added. I've started it out with several, but more an be added. Doctorindy (talk) 15:51, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Disputed Page Move

I have a Disputed Page move for a Template I was trying to move last night. The pages I was trying to move were User:UBX/NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series → User:UBX/NASCAR Camping World Truck Series per the new Series Name Change. I assumed that since the Camping World Truck Series was the new name of the series I shouldn't of had a Problem. But I did as someone disputed it per a Essay of WP:Broke, now I am having to dispute it per WP:NAME. The Discussion is at User talk:UBX/NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Please put your input in. GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

Had I been around, I would have objected to the speedy and improved it. Don't let this be a precedent that bad results equals speedy delete. Looking at the article, it didn't have any content - just an infobox. So a basically empty article got deleted. Royalbroil 02:26, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Nationwide driver's images - HELP NEEDED

Many of my pictures rank high on google, and a major NASCAR sponsor used one of my images for a marketing flier. To thank me for the image, they gave me a NASCAR garage & pit pass. I had special permission and was able to be with the drivers during introductions. So I took tons of pictures and uploaded every driver that I could to my flickr account, starting here. Now I can't identify many of the drivers. I want to use pictures of any driver without a Wikipedia image. Can everyone please help me identify the drivers? The race results can be found here. I haven't even started with pictures of the cars yet, I took many pictures of each car while they were parked on the frontstretch with my super high quality Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XS. I used my pocket camera with the drivers. It was an AWESOME experience that I'll never forget for the rest of my life. Royalbroil 00:16, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject NASCAR to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject NASCAR/Popular pages.

Changes to popular pages lists

There are a few important changes to the popular pages system. A quick summary:

• The "importance" ranking (for projects that use it) will be included in the lists along with assessment.
• The default list size has been lowered to 500 entries (from 1000)
• I've set up a project on the Toolserver for the popular pages - tools:~alexz/pop/.
  • This includes a page to view the results for projects, including the in-progress results from the current month. Currently this can only show the results from a single project in one month. Features to see multiple projects or multiple months may be added later.
  • This includes a new interface for making requests to add a new project to the list.
  • There is also a form to request a change to the configuration for a project. Currently the configurable options are the size of the on-wiki list and the project subpage used for the list.
• The on-wiki list should be generated and posted in a more timely and consistent manner than before.
• The data is now retained indefinitely.
• The script used to generate the pages has changed. The output should be the same. Please report any apparent inconsistencies (see below).
• Bugs and feature requests should be reported using the Toolserver's bug tracker for "alexz's tools" - [1]

Revised Infobox

What did you change? A change to an infobox that affected thousands of articles needs to be discussed in detail. I'm glad to see that you have taken that step. I see many issues. The worst one is how how there there are wikilinks to dates which is highly controversial. Why is the article linked to April 18th - how does reading an article about that date help you understand this driver? Even worse is the wikilink to April 18th - if anything it should be April 18. "2x Daytona 500 Winner" is way too informal - we have several Good Articles which will need tighter wording (Mario Andretti, Alan Kulwicki, Tim Richmond, A. J. Foyt IV). Strong Oppose Color is not to be used to convey information per Wikipedia:Colours#Using_colours_in_articles. I see no improvement. Why would we want to do literally thousands of edits for some style changes? There needs to be a critical, strong, and COMPELLING reason to do such a huge undertaking, and I don't see any reason. What we have works just fine. Second, the field names look just like that - field names. We need to hide the details from the reader. These field names look awful, clunky, and they would prohibit articles from being able to be advanced to Good or Featured articles. Royalbroil 19:28, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

I like how your current driver infobox has the car number and team. That's useful information. However, I wouldn't want to make that change for all current drivers because it would take too long. The best thing that you did was ASK! You didn't just make massive changes that affects so many articles without thinking about it and do it the Wikipedia way - discuss it! I don't like how the infobox got even taller. The infobox is still way too wide tall for many articles - the majority of NASCAR drivers are stubby like Eddie Bierschwale. Since you're inspired, how about we try a real world example like him. How would you make it look better for someone with short article with a modest career like him? Your proposal is much taller, which is even a bigger problem when the driver has an image which falls off most monitor resolutions. I do like the years active information, but I don't think that it's worth making the infobox get longer. What can you do to display this information but in the shortest infobox possible? I like how the current infobox displays wins, Top 10s, and poles all in one area. I like how the current infobox only displays Nationwide and Truck series' results only if the driver did some races.

Wow, I didn't know that Eddie's final race was one of the most interesting races in NASCAR history - Richard Petty's last race, Jeff Gordon's first race, and the day that underdog privateer Alan Kulwicki won the championship by 1 position in the race results over Bill Elliott's well-funded team. I don't think that anything is broken - you're trying to fix something with no problem. I know you've worked real hard on it. Unfortunately, that's not a reason to make a huge number changes. I've worked hard on some things in here just to see it not get used. So why did you decide to fix this infobox? If you determined that the infobox needs a style change, then please figure out how to combine the style change with a way to make the infobox shorter. A longer infobox or one with less features is almost guaranteed to be opposed. The width of the infobox is fixed by a discussion at WikiProject Motorsport, our parent WikiProject, to allow consistency with drivers like Juan Pablo Montoya who have raced in multiple genres of motorsport and have numerous infoboxes. You do not suck!!! I know what you mean, though. I bet I spent 50 to 100 hours on updating Alan Kulwicki's article after it became a Good Article, trying to get it up to Featured Article status. When I got there, everyone disagreed with everything about it. It's still not Featured. I did learn a lot and my work is much better now. I'd only support a change to the infobox if it resulted in the infobox getting shorter. I don't see how rearranging the awards section to the end helps or hurts anything. It's just different. GAN backlog reduction - Sports and recreation

As you may know, we currently have 400 good article nominations, with a large number of them being in the sports and recreation section. As such, the waiting time for this is especially long, much longer than it should be. As a result of this, I am asking each sports-related WikiProject to review two or three of these nominations. If this is abided by, then the backlog should be cleared quite quickly. Some projects nominate a lot but don't review, or vice-versa, and following this should help to provide a balance and make the waiting time much smaller so that our articles can actually get reviewed! Duplicate articles

I notice that we have both 2009 Crown Royal 400 and 2009 Crown Royal Presents the Russell Friedman 400 which appear to be duplicate articles about the same race. 2008 Lifelock 400

I notice that we have 2008 Lifelock 400 (second 'l' lowercase) but we also have 2008 LifeLock 400 (second 'L' uppercase) which is a redirect to 2008 Camping World RV 400 presented by Coleman. Am I right in thinking that 2008 Lifelock 400 should actually be called "2008 LifeLock 400" and that neither one should redirect to 2008 Camping World RV 400 presented by Coleman? List of Daytona 500 pole position winners

I have been working with User:Ched Davis to improve the article to become a Featured List candidate. There is no featured content under WikiProject NASCAR right now, just one failed FA candidate. We spent a lot of time improving the text in the article, but I've been feeling that the article is getting more and more off-topic for a list article. I recently had a peer review, and the reviewer suggested that most of the text might be best forked into a new article about the qualifying procedure for the Daytona 500. Ched suggested that the majority of the content could be used for a NASCAR qualifying article with a subsection on the special qualifying procedure used because of the special Twin qualifying races for the Daytona 500. So the questions are - Is the article on-topic? Is there too much detail about the qualifying procedure? That Hudson Hornet image is missing its source. I have brought it up at Commons and it might have to be deleted. Sorry about that. I do see that the person who uploaded that image has done this before and has always changed to claiming that they took the picture themself. Would you put a border around the infobox? Are you sure that you should have restored it? It makes the article WAY too long and I can't work with it. Why isn't the motorsports people put into their own article with having a {{main}} link to that article? You must have added an email address when you restored the content. The "tag" gives some quick information to anyone watching the edit history. Often something like email address is added by vandals (obviously you aren't a vandal!). I moved this comment to the bottom of the talk page, that's where new comments go. There is very much to do to improve it. There is only a handful of references - I would expect the article to have around 60 references if it were a Good Article. You need to review every sentence and support it with a reference. Be very careful to use reliable sources like magazines, ESPN, NASCAR, possibly limited use of his official website as a last resort. You can combine a single source used in multiple sentences by using named references. Check out Alan Kulwicki if you want to see an excellent example. AK's article is probably ready for Featured Article consideration again and I might nominate it soon. The best thing for you to do would be to review other Good Articles so that you can see how it's done. Check out Alan Kulwicki, Tim Richmond, Mario Andretti, A. J. Foyt IV for examples. I think that the list of Johnson's wins is way too long and it should be removed from the article. Wikipedia is not a statistics database - rather it is an encyclopedia of sentences. Why arn't top fives posted?

I noticed you guys post top tens, poles and wins for each nascar driver. Top fives are just as important if not more important than top tens. If you go on the nascar website they usually post poles, wins, top fives, top tens. In that order. Should be a stat posted for each driver. If you guys are going to just do wins and poles that is fine, but if you post top tens then you pretty much have to post top fives as well. It would be like if you post poles but not wins. There are too many article to think about it now - I'm not going to spend any time on it. It would be overwhelming and there is almost no one here to do it beside myself. While I agree that it's important, it's not nearly as important as poles, wins, or Top 10s. It would no doubt take hundreds of hours to do all of the work. Besides, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a statistics database. If someone wants to look it up, then they can go to nascar.com or racing-reference.info. Royalbroil 13:51, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Problems with 2009 season articles

Having quickly dashed through the collection of articles under 2009 in motorsport template, I have found the following articles do not mention who won the race/championship/title featured in the topic in the opening paragraph, or in the executive summary at the start of each of the articles.

The winner of these series or events is the most important detail of each as sporting events and they should all have this article included up top as a matter of logical writing for encylopedic content.

Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject NASCAR/Unreferenced BLPs. As of May 17 you only have approximately 39 articles to be referenced, a 2.5% reduction from last week. The list of all other WikiProject UBLPs can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons/WikiProjects.

Category:NASCAR races at ...

As User:Mike Selinker commented here, each "Category:NASCAR races at ..." is a subcategory of Category:NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races and only includes articles on Cup races. What should we do with the articles on other NASCAR races? If we put them in the respective "Category:NASCAR races at ...", then I think that the latter should be moved to a new Category:NASCAR races by track, which would be a subcategory of Category:NASCAR tracks and Category:NASCAR races. --NaBUru38 (talk) 23:36, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
