Moxy, This is helpful, thank you. I was just coming here to ping User:Netha Hussain about possibly crafting a template message we could post to other translation projects. Seems Moxy thought of something similar already. I do wonder if there are other places we can reach out, even outside English Wikipedia, to get more editors to collaborate in this space. Wikidata? Wikimedia Commons? WikiProject COVID-19 in other languages? Yes, let us do a template message. Haven't done that before, but I can definitely help. Although I started this project, I would like for others to join the effort and take leadership roles. Also, curious if User:Bluerasberry or User:Doc James may know of other channels to ping at WikiProject Medicine or elsewhere. Would be great to get more editors with translation skills collaborating here. Translation support and feedback

Content translation is tool created by the Wikimedia Foundation Language team that allows to translate Wikipedia articles into other languages. We are interested in finding ways to better support your efforts for improving the information on such a relevant topic as COVID-19. So feel free to share any comments on how we can better support your efforts (from specific bugs you find in the tool, to more general ideas to improve it). Below I provide some more context about the tool and how we supported other efforts.

The tool automates several steps of the translation process to let users focus on creating quality translations. When available it integrates machine translation as a starting point and encourages users to review it. Overall we've seen a good amount of content created with the tool (over 600K articles across all languages) with low deletion ratios (5% last year), compared to articles created without the tool (11% during the same period).

Users can use Content Translation to translate any article of their choice. In addition to that, it provides suggestions based on previous edits. We have also supported some campaigns by enabling a specific URL parameter that allows users to directly access a specific article to translate (without having to enable the beta feature), and allows tracking how many people created content through such channel. This ticket provides more details on how this was supported for the Wiki for Human Rights event. We can provide similar support for WikiProject COVID-19 if it were helpful.

Normally organizers create a list of pages that need to be translated (example) where the above links can be included to direct people to Content Translation. For generating such page, Wikidata queries may be useful.

We are interested to hear what we can improve in the tool based on the experience of those using it. In particular, it is very relevant to hear from those organizing events and coordinated projects. So feel free to share any thoughts on how we can help and any experiences about what works and does not about the tool.

COVID-19 posters available in many languages

I've uploaded three COVID-19 posters from U.S. CDC and OSHA that are available in ~20 languages each. Please feel free to add these to the relevant Wikipedia language editions. Identifying stable, reliable content for translation

@Netha Hussain, Pavanaja, Nintendofan885, and Shanze1: I was wondering if there is a way to which text is most important to translate into other languages? Ideally stable and reliably sourced. Wikimedia UK work with the Welsh Wicipedia, and it would be useful to be able to suggest some text to their editors who are interested in doing translation. @Richard Nevell (WMUK): This is one aspect I am working on. Translatable content should not only contain important information, but also be stable, reliable and adequately referenced. I am pressed for time now because I am preparing for my PhD defence scheduled for next week. I will have finished my PhD in June, after which I am planning to get more work done in this area. I will select some articles related to COVID-19 and arrange them in the order of importance based on pageview and my experience in medicine. I will then create a short (stub class) and a long (start class) article for each of these articles, which can then be translated to other languages. Alternatively, you can suggest articles that are important for Welsh Wikipedia and I can create short versions for those articles. I plan to work on this sometime around June-August, so I don't know if this timeline will be good for you, too. If you would like to have the texts on an earlier date, we can discuss about it over email or a conference call. Good luck with the defence! I can only imagine how harrd it must be to prepare for while there's the disruption of a global pandemic going on. I'll get in touch with the Welsh language community and see if they have opinions on what would be useful.
