Benefits of Commons

I have only placed a few of my own images on WC so far, so I am not yet that familiar with it. The impression I get though, is that it is worth the effort of setting up an account -because now I can instantly find them again. Also, other people have helped to place the images into categories that had not occurred to me on WP because I was just considering the image in terms of illustrating the WP article alone.

Therefore, would it be worth putting more emphasis on the pluses (to the contributor) to using WC, so as to positive encourage more contributors to uploaded to it directly. Moreover, one can easily find similar images, and if their photos, it reassuring to discover that you at least, know how to take a 'proper' photograph :) --Aspro 16:50, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Policy for transferring photographs to Commons

Then there are the people who upload photos to Commons with no notice to or discussion with the originating photographers. So ...

My humble suggestion:

• Before doing anything to initiate a transfer, the photographer must be contacted to discuss the potential transfer. No transfer will ever be made without prior communication with the photographer.

• The person wishing to execute a transfer (transferer) must ascertain the photographer's opinion about making the transfer. If the photographer does not understand the meaning of the transfer or the nature of the Commons, the transferer must explain this to him or her.

• If the photographer agrees to the transfer, the transfer may be made.

• If the photographer does not agree to the transfer, discussion must continue to ascertain the reason(s) for the disagreement in an attempt to implement reasonable and mutually acceptable procedures to secure agreement.

• If no agreement can be made, the photographer will be provided the option to have his or her photograph(s) deleted completely from Wikipedia. If the photographer does not agree to deletion and does not agree to the transfer after reasonable efforts are made to secure his or her agreement, the transferer may transfer the photographs 14 days after the initial contact with the photographer was made.

Right tone

I think this is a helpful page, striking the right tone. Some messages relating to the moving of images have been far too peremptory, suggesting the editor is stupid or has done something wrong. The audience here mostly consists of very occasional uploaders so fairly fundamental advice is helpful. Thincat 13:43, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Separate accounts?

With the new "global accounts" system, the the line "Each Wikimedia project has a separate login system, so it is necessary to obtain usernames separately on Wikipedia and Commons." in the last section on the page still true? It isn't worded particularly clearly, so I could have misunderstood it? Anyone know for certain? Arriva436^talk 22:13, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Sorta. With the assumption that you have a Wikipedia login and no Commons login, you can go to Commons and, if it doesn't automatically log you in by itself, enter your Wikipedia username and password and it will create an account for you. Note that preferences other than password and email will have to be selected per-site, so if you visit Russian Wikipedia, the interface will be in Russian until you change it in preferences.
