The Importance of Being Earnest is a drawing-room comedy by Oscar Wilde, premiered on 14 February 1895 in London. It depicts the affairs of two young men about town who lead double lives to evade unwanted social obligations, both assuming the name Ernest to woo two young women. Other characters are the formidable Lady Bracknell, the fussy governess Miss Prism and the benign and scholarly Canon Chasuble. The play, celebrated for its wit and repartee, parodies contemporary dramatic norms and comically satirises late-Victorian manners. The triumphant opening night was followed within weeks by Wilde's downfall and imprisonment for homosexual acts and the closure of the production, and Wilde wrote no more comic or dramatic works. From the early 20th century onwards the play has been revived frequently and adapted for radio, television, film, operas and musicals. (Full article...)

Picture of the day for November 24, 2024

The Double Asteroid Redirection Test, abbreviated as DART, was a NASA space mission aimed at testing a method of planetary defense against near-Earth objects. The target asteroid, Dimorphos, is a minor-planet moon of the asteroid Didymos. DART was launched on 24 November 2021 and had successfully collided with Dimorphos on 26 September 2022 about 11 million kilometers (6.8 million miles) from Earth. The collision shortened Dimorphos' orbit by 32 minutes and was achieved by the momentum transfer associated with the recoil of the ejected debris, which was larger than the impact. This video is captured by a 20-centimeter aperture camera called the Didymos Reconnaissance and Asteroid Camera for Optical navigation (DRACO) and shows a compiled time lapse of DART's final 5 and a half minutes until impact.

Talk:The_Origin_of_Species#immediately? Please change "and immediately sold out its initial print run." to "and sold out its initial print run on the first day." — Jeandré, 2005-11-24t15:37z

Good idea. Fixed accordingly. Thanks. -- PFHLai 21:22, 24 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

a couple of things

edit

I'd like to suggest a couple of minor chages to the wordings here:

  1. can the link text for the JFK entry be changed to "assassin to US President John F. Kennedy"
  2. I think it would be good to say where the D. B. Cooper incident occured.

Conrad and Isabella

edit

Hi! I cannot edit the page, but I would like to suggest a few changes:

Conrad of Montferrat became de facto King of Jerusalem after marrying Queen Isabella.

Both Conrad and Isabella were de facto and de jure monarchs of Jerusalem. Conrad became de jure uxoris (by the right of wife) King of Jerusalem when he married Isabella. His wife also needs to be distinguished from another Queen of Jerusalem, who is sometimes called Isabella II, so it should be Isabella I. Surtsicna (talk) 18:45, 24 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

As stated in the FAQ above, Births and deaths can only be used on centennials, etc. Zzyzx11 (talk) 06:46, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Israel-Hamas ceasefire

edit

Could the 2023 Israel-Hamas ceasefire which occurred on this day be eligible? The article seems fine. Personisinsterest (talk) 14:34, 13 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
