Wikipedia meet up Kolkata 6 - A report

edit

Kolkata, July 9, 2011 - A sixth Wikipedia meet-up was held in Kolkata on 9th July, 2011 at the Atmabikash Samity Sabha Griha, 77, Rashbehari Avenue. It was a meeting about two and a half hours' which commenced from 3:30 pm and lasted till 6:00 pm. Jayanta Nath is one of the three Wikipedian administrator in Kolkata who had invited the people and also searched for those who were interested to know about Wikipedia. This sixth meet-up of Wikipedia consisted of twelve persons including Nath. All the people present there were very much interested to know about Wikipedia and to work on it. As it was held in the city of Kolkata, which is said to be the home for Bengali community in India so the main topic of discussion was to promote the Bengali language and to promote Bengali Wikipedia. Nath requested each and every Bengali individual to write at least a line or at least edit any part of an article which they think is wrong or not up to the mark. For doing this, one should gain the habit of reading the articles which are already there in Wikipedia. The first session of the meeting was the introducing session. For those who were new, they introduced themselves one after the other. First of all Nath introduced himself then everyone followed him. After introducing session there comes the teaching session. Those who were new to Wikipedia, Nath first of all acknowledged them about what is Wikipedia and how it should be used. He made everyone aware that one can write an article if and only if the article is extracted from a valid source. Writing from own mind or citing anything which does not have any valid reference will not be accepted and the name of the source should also be duly mentioned. Nath taught all the newcomers in Wikipedia to start writing any article and to make an own account in it. The newcomers and the other entire person present there found it very interesting and wanted to start their own account as soon as possible. Then the discussion session where all the person attented, shared their views with each other. Sharing views and discussion made everyone gain more and more knowledge. In this session Wikimedia photographer Biswarup Ganguly had shown the way to upload photographs in Wikimedia Commons. Last comes the photograph session where a group photograph of all the people attended there was taken by the photographer. -- Medha Ganguly (talk) 15:50, 18 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
