To do

Get a notice sent out to the GAN mailing list. Ideally, we are able to update the list as discussed at Wikipedia_talk:Mass_message_senders#Update_mailing_list. If not, should still be sent out (example here)

On 29 May or so, paste the following message at MediaWiki talk:Watchlist-messages:

{{Edit fully-protected|answered=no}} Starting on 1 June, and running for a month, there will be a backlog drive for good article nominations. Would it be possible to set up a watch-page message alerting users about the drive? Ideally it would run on 30 May and/or 1 June, and say something like

Thanks in advance,

Hello. The mailing list needs to be updated as there are blocked users on the list. There are also users that have been inactive for years as well on the list, but the blocked users I think would be a higher priority. Thanks! MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 17:16, 27 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
It looks like Kayvansh has been purging the list. (t · c) buidhe 17:38, 27 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

I've pre-loaded the List of qualifying old articles and List of abandoned reviews sections, commenting out the entries until the end of the day; I figure they should go live shortly before midnight, once any newly opened/taken-over reviews are removed. I'll be updating the main WP:GAN page notice about the drive as soon after midnight as I can manage. I'll be updating the Progress section each night shortly after 01:00 UTC, since the Report page runs then and has the best data (I back out all changes between 00:00 and 01:00). Blocked nominator

edit

Hi coordinators. I'm reviewing Timnit Gebru, and the nominator was just blocked for two months. Any advice on how to proceed? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 01:25, 14 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

If it’s basically GA already, I’d pass it, otherwise provide your feedback and mark it as a failed GA. Someone else can renominate it then. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 06:38, 14 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Drive extension?

edit

I just looked at this current drive's activity and am surprised by the low percentage compared to previous drives. Should there be a month extension for this to boost interest? GamerPro64 06:33, 24 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

I'd be happy with that (although maybe two weeks is an alternative), but certainly we'd need the people competing for the top spot on board. And the coords... —Kusma (talk) 06:56, 24 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
I think maybe too many GANs now so backlog drives cannot keep up with the demand. Thingofme (talk) 09:29, 24 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Standards for this drive are also significantly stricter than they were for the last one, which almost certainly is depressing the number of reviews done. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 17:57, 24 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
We also don't seem to manage to clear out the very old noms. For the next drive, perhaps we should consider an extra half point for reviews of very long articles? —Kusma (talk) 11:33, 25 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Kusma, the very old noms list started with over 115 entries on June 1, all 90 days old or longer. Of those, only 7 remain, and they have been joined by dozens more that aged onto the list, of which 25 remain. So while there are a few stubborn ones that don't get picked up, the vast bulk of old noms do. I think the reason we have as many remaining over 90 days as we do is because the reviewers aren't as active as usual. I doubt that extending the drive will boost interest. It would probably be better to have a new drive in September or October; things slow down from mid-June through the end of August, and we're already seeing that here. BlueMoonset (talk) 14:03, 25 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Maybe. But I'm still wondering whether we should give long articles some extra help in the next drive. I know that I am personally a bit reluctant to start working on the very long ones. —Kusma (talk) 14:21, 25 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
What was the rationale behind removing the extra points for reviewing X number of words? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 14:31, 25 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Pickersgill-Cunliffe, the extra points were introduced in the July 2021 drive for both old articles and X number of words, but the latter was dropped by the coordinators of subsequent drives, while the old articles bonus is still offered. I didn't see a reason given on the July 2021 or January 2022 drive talk pages. My guess is that it was felt to add more work and complication without sufficient reviewer incentive. There's a lot to say for simplicity when it comes to running a drive. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:38, 26 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'd prob be more in favour of bringing this drive to a close and doing another one in September or October, to echo Bluemoonset's suggestion. I def won't have much time in July. Mujinga (talk) 15:42, 25 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
I doubt that extending the drive would do much. BlueMoonset is correct that things usually slow down around mid-June, which is why the drive has slowed significantly since it began. — Golden call me maybe? 16:27, 25 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
If it's tailing off now, I'm not sure another month would do too much. I do think we might need to temper our expectations for these drives ... the two 2020 ones are probably fresh in our memories yet, but reflect conditions that are out of the norm. Hog Farm Talk 17:03, 25 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
What happened in those? My only other backlog drive was this January, and in that drive we nearly ran out of old noms. —Kusma (talk) 17:09, 25 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/GAN Backlog Drives/April–May 2020 we took it down from over 600 unreviewed to at one point 207 (although it was a two-monther and saw the count grow back up into the 230s by the end of the second month). Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/GAN Backlog Drives/October 2020 cut it down from 552 to 285. I think the COVID empty time (especially for the first one) created a lot of extra reviewer time that isn't around anymore. Hog Farm Talk 17:22, 25 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
The January 2022 drive was 462->165 unreviewed. I don't quite understand what the impact of COVID is here, as I would expect that people had more time to write GAs as well. —Kusma (talk) 18:52, 25 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

I don't disagree with the comments about things slowing down, but what would be the harm in extending a couple weeks? Even if only a few more reviews are done, that's better than nothing in my book. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 14:00, 26 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Trainsandotherthings, pinging your colleague coordinators for their thoughts, since they (and you) will have to continue running things if there is such an extension: Buidhe, Hog Farm, Harrias, Kavyansh.Singh, and Shushugah. Noting that there is the risk of burnout if the current drive is extended, which could affect participation in the next drive. BlueMoonset (talk) 23:57, 26 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
If the decision is made to extend the drive, I'm willing to continue with coordination. Hog Farm Talk 00:25, 27 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
I don't think extending past a month is a good idea. Rather wait a few months and run another drive, possibly in September. (t · c) buidhe 00:35, 27 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Based on past experience, we're likely to get significantly diminishing returns for a second month. I concur with Buidhe that it would be better to wrap this one up as scheduled, but run another sooner rather than later. Harrias (he/him) • talk 07:23, 27 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
I agree. Having another drive in, say, September, would be better than extending this one. – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 09:47, 27 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Before we start/propose a new backlog, shall we finish reviewing the current GA reviews? I'm committed to tackling a bunch this week. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 18:49, 12 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
I believe that they need to be reviewed. The January GAN backlog drive reviews were finished in May, and this one lasted through June. Vacant0 (talk) 20:43, 15 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
I thought the consensus was that not every single review needs to be checked. That was my understanding, anyhow. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 21:56, 15 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
@BlueMoonset @Buidhe @GamerPro64 @Golden @Harrias @Hog Farm @Kavyansh.Singh @Kusma pinging all just in case.
We need to figure out whether we're reviewing all the GAN reviews (which is unrelated to reviewing every single reference; something we agreed is above required). Even if not, we still need to calculate the points/assign barnstars in such a case. This also suggests to me, that we still haven't figured a sweet spot of encouraging new GA reviewers, while also keeping up as backlog coordinators. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 22:26, 16 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
I thought the general rule was to check some reviews for each reviewer; if there's no problems with any of the ones checked then AGF on the rest. If a reviewer has had issues, more of their reviews should be checked. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 22:29, 16 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yes, even I though that not all reviews need to be checked. For some users, however, we need to check more reviews just to ensure everything is fine. – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 06:00, 17 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Barnstars

edit

Is it just me or are there a surprising amount of different barnstars to be awarded for scores that nobody reaches? We have categories for 20, 30, 40, and 60, and last time, there were a grand total of six people above 20 (nobody above 60, and nobody between 29 and 50). This time, it seems unlikely that more than three people will get above 20, while only person will score more than 30 points. With increased quality requirements for reviews, perhaps the expected number of reviews for a shiny barnstar could be reduced next time? —Kusma (talk) 09:09, 27 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

The current scale is the result of a value shift that occurred between March 2021 and July 2021. I speculate that this was the result of a quite successful March creating inflationary pressures. As we seem to be no longer in those times, a shift back for the next drive may be a good idea. CMD (talk) 09:39, 27 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
It wasn't an inflationary shift, but the addition of bonus half-points for old nominations in July 2021 that caused the barnstar point levels to rise. I'd imagine some fine tuning is still needed, since not every review is of an old GAN. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:55, 1 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
