This is just in my opinion, but I think he probably doesn't mean it when he says "I am leaving". He probably needs time to devandalise his user page, or takes short wikibreaks of 1-2 weeks. The Updater Stubmechanic 11:06, 19 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Confused

edit

Hi there, I have my name on the join up list for people who don't meet the requirements yet. Just wondering, do you need to have roughly 150 main edits or just 150 edits in total? Please help, I want to join soon! ps. I have 95 main edits and roughly 325 total edits. Thanks, Jam01 05:53, 22 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm pretty sure it's 150 total edits. If it is, then welcome to Esperanza :) --james(talk) 06:01, 22 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, depends. If you have 150 edits to your userpage or something like that, then chances are it really isn't that great. But I took a quick look at you contribs and they look fine. I see you've welcomed a lot of people, and that's a good sign for an Esperaznan. So I'd say you don't have anything to worry about :) Ungovernable ForceThe Wiki Kitchen! 06:17, 22 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Members list

edit

I was just adding my name to members who wanted to join Esperanza and I was looking at the list of members, and I think the active/inactive/former/ lists need to updated. Any suggestions as to how to go about updating this? — The Future 23:00, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Being rather un-technilogically minded, the only way I can think of is to go through it manually, since there isn't really one source that says if someone has left Wikipedia or been indef blocked or something. -- Natalya 15:48, 31 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Should we use a bot to do check the members? --Terence Ong (T | C) 15:50, 31 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
No bot like that exists that I know of except the Rick Block admin update script he runs to check status' of admins, but that would take a lot more time to figure out than to manually check it, I think.. — The Future 21:47, 31 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Request your thoughts requested regarding 3RR

edit

User:71.34.113.170 raised a question regarding 3RR on Wikipedia:Village pump (policy).

Carcharoth responded "Actual discussion, including moving stuff to the talk page to discuss it, trumps 3RR and Being Bold everytime, IMO."

My take on this is that what Carcharoth wrote sounds good but isn't true.

Here's what I wrote:

I disagree with Carcharoth's assertion that 3RR does not apply if there is discussion. If you get to the third contentious edit on anything, you should stop and take a breather. Discussion doesn't mean "I reverted your edit and here's why". Discussion means "I think your edit should be reverted and here's why".
Yes, I know this is really hard to do when there's an egregiously bad piece of text in article mainspace. You have to use your judgment. If the text says "John Seigenthaler was suspected of..." then you have to take it out and rely on the "gross violation of policy" defense. If, on the other hand, it's just a POV rant, then it's probably better to let it stand after your second attempt and let another editor step in. If this doesn't prevent an edit war, then issue an RFC and go through the dispute resolution process. Consider this (proposed) guideline: Other than slander, libel, copyright violations and incivility in the article itself, the biggest sin on Wikipedia is edit-warring. Avoid it at all costs. --Richard 19:36, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Some context for what I wrote... Some of you may remember that a few weeks ago, I wrote a message saying that I needed help because I was in the midst of a budding edit war with an anonymous editor who was putting in poorly written POV text. I had reached the 3RR limit and wanted to find a way to maintain Wikipedia quality without getting into an edit war and violating 3RR.

I came here and the response I got was two-fold: (1) Esperanza doesn't take sides in disuptes and (2) take a breather. Both of these comments, while frustrating at the time, turned out to be pretty good advice.

I found a sort of compromise with the anon that made him happier than it made me and the next morning another editor reverted the whole thing. The anon never came back so peace reigns in that corner of the Wikipedia universe.

Anyway, I have come to conclude that except for a few really egregious violations, the cardinal sin on Wikipedia is edit-warring.

Your thoughts and feedback are solicited.

Would Esperanza be useful in helping me find Wikipedians to collaborate with on articles?

edit

A couple of weeks ago, after a conflict with an anonymous user, I declared my Wikilife to be in a state of crisis. Natalya left an encouraging note on my talk page. One of my problems was that I was facing difficulty finding Wikipedians to collaborate on articles. She suggested I join Esperanza as they could help me find Wikipedians to collaborate with.

My goal on Wikipedia is to contribute information to articles on my interests, and to make Wikifriends who share my interests. Therefore, I envisioned a system of collaboration. For example, let's say I wanted to make RuneScape a good article. I find three or four other editors who play RuneScape and wish to collaborate with me. We then work on the article: adding content and images, identifying and fixing problems, and ensuring the article meets Good Article criteria. Eventually we will send the article for peer review and nominate it for Good Article. While we discuss on the talk page about how to improve the article, we are likely to get to know each other and become Wikifriends.

Unfortunately, I have not been successful in finding Wikipedians to collaborate with. This, coupled with several other issues, including anonymous vandals and a dispute over the Homerun redirect, has caused me stress. Natalya has touted Esperanza as a way to find Wikipedians to collaborate with. Therefore, I wish to ask whether Esperanza would really be helpful in helping me find Wikipedians to collaborate with. Currently, Esperanza seems like a community of Wikipedians who send well-wishes to those who are stressed.

My interests include computers/websites and Singapore TV shows/movies. I have a to-do list on my userpage which you should consider checking out. If you are interested in collaborating with me on any of the articles listed there, please drop a note on my talk page.

--J.L.W.S. The Special One 12:21, 2 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Have you checked out the various WikiProjects? They're a good way of collaborating with others, though some projects are more active than others. Good luck. --Fang Aili talk 17:38, 2 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
I joined the WikiProject Computer and video games to cover the Neopets, RuneScape, AdventureQuest and Chip's Challenge articles. What I need is a WikiProject for Singapore TV shows/movies. I discussed on the Wikipedia:SGpedians' notice board about plans to create a WikiProject Singapore, but the proposal fell through. Would Esperanza be useful here? --J.L.W.S. The Special One 04:49, 3 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Maybe there's people at WikiProject Television (or Film) who focus on Singapore. But if you want to start a wikiproject, I recommend just doing it. (I did that with WikiProject Figure Skating - there's no acceptance process; you just do it.) There seems to be a significant community of Singaporeans on en.wp, and I'd bet that if you started a wikiproject you'd get quite a few members, even if support seemed lackluster at Wikipedia:SGpedians' notice board. In fact I'm quite surpised one doesn't exist already. --Fang Aili talk 13:44, 3 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hmm.. well, Wikipedia:SGpedians' notice board looks to be the equivalent of WikiProject Singapore (and Wikipedia:WikiProject Singapore even redirects there). Is there some reason you can't collaborate with those folks? --Fang Aili talk 13:47, 3 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
I echo Fang Aili's suggestions about just starting the Wikiproject. People are often reluctant to start something on their own, or help to organize it, but once something has been established, they could be a lot more likely to join it and help out. -- Natalya 00:37, 7 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

deleted Image:Friendship_is_a.jpg which seems to criticise EA as a dead end friendship

edit

I have deleted from the main Esperanza page the image Image:Friendship_is_a.jpg (available from Wikimedia Commons) which in my interpretation seemed to criticise Esperanza as a dead end friendship. If anyone disagrees with this, please discuss the appropriateness of the image. Thank you. --Tachikoma 02:06, 6 September 2006

After thinking about it, I suppose that User:Gmaxwell may have intended to suggest that friendship in of itself is the end or destination. I hope he will understand that the image that he had inserted is open to interpretation and may not say to all users what he meant. I also hope he will understand if I suggest that the image not be reinserted on the page, precisely due to this risk of misinterpretation. Please don't feel offended, it's nothing personal. This message has been copied onto the user's talk page as well. Sorry for the trouble. --Tachikoma 02:21, 6 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just had to share this with someone...

edit

I know this isn't exactly related to the mission of Esperanza but I just had to share this with someone.

So... I was using the Lupin filter of recent changes to do some RC Patrulling. Up comes this article Poutine which matches the keyword "poo" (used in providing the pronuncination of this French word). I figure "OK, that's a reasonable use of the syllable but, hey, what's this article about? Is it a hoax? I mean food that looks like poo and has a name that sounds like poo? Come on. This can't be for real." So, I read the article and was pretty suspicious until I saw the CBC link. Ya know, this might actually be legit. Anytime somebody makes fun of our American low-brow culture, I'm gonna reference this bit of Canajun culture.

P.S. If this does turn out to be a hoax, I'm gonna be SOOOO embarassed.

--Richard 06:58, 7 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Haha. There is such a thing as poutine, it doesn't taste very good, and it is pronounced as "poo", I guess just because the French (Canadians) are silly :P ~ Booya Bazooka 07:35, 7 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes poutine does in fact exist in real life. It's actually one of my favorite foods. French fries+Gravey+Cheese Curds=delicious. You mostly find it in eastern Canada, probably not any farther west than Toronto except at Ski Resorts. Nearly every ski resort in Canada or the US will probably serve poutine on their cafeteria menu, and it's worth trying. Yum. Canadian-Bacon t c e 17:03, 13 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I tried following the instructions, and since I couldn't find a "Nickname" section, I copy/pasted to the "signature" section, except that left me posting the letter "o" as a signature. Que es la problema? -Umdunno 21:49, 9 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Did you set your preferences to a raw signature? DemosDemon 22:09, 9 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
La problema es que necesitas reemplazar sólo uno de las letras de tu apodo con el vínculo a Esperanza. Actualmente, puedes inscribir:
--Umdunn<font color="green">o</font>
En ves de todos (y algo de) los contenidos en la caja. Después, necesitas marcar "Firma sin enlace automático". ¡Muchas gracias! —Celestianpower háblame 22:24, 9 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
(translation) The problem is that you need to replace only one of the letters from your signature with the link to Esperanza. Actually, you can enter:
--Umdunn<font color="green">o</font>
Instead of all (and any) of the contents of the box. Then, you need to check "Raw signature". Many thanks! —Celestianpower háblame 22:24, 9 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Er, "hi" and stuff

edit

I thought it was about time I actually joined in with the community after spending a few weeks committing random acts of editing. My first day as an Esperanzan (is that a real word? I suppose it is now) seems to have mostly involved reverting other people's edits and playing with userboxes, which seems like a potentially rather inauspicious start. I'll try harder. Hopefully.

Anyway. Er, "hi".

Front page redesign wrapping up!

edit

For those of you who haven't been watching the page, the Esperanza front page redesign has pretty much finished! Everyone is invited to take a look at the final design; if there are no issues found, it will go live in a day or two. Lots of people have put lots of hard work into it, so be sure to take a look! -- Natalya 14:36, 12 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'd also like to say that we need as much constructive criticism as possible. Everything can be tweaked if people feel there is a problem. Our visual goals were to make the page less cluttered, more clean, and easier to navigate. Our content goals were to get directly to the point and better describe what Esperanza is (less stuff that some people consider "wishy-washy," more stuff about what we actually do). Let us know either on the page linked above or in this thread here whether we've accomplished that, and if there is anything visually or content-wise that you would change. EWS23 (Leave me a message!) 16:40, 12 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
I for one like it. It looks a lot more professional then the previous page and seems a lot more navigable and less cluttered. Using the day by day calender looks a lot cleaner than having the whole month up. The projects listing at the bottom is very clean as well. I don't really have much criticism to give, it's Very well done. Canadian-Bacon t c e 17:30, 12 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

A month and a day late Esperanza anniversary

edit

Thanks to the good memories of Ed, and NoSeptember, it was discovered that Esperanza's one-year anniversary was on August 12th. It wasn't realized until a couple days ago, so I thought we could at least celebrate a month late, and recognize it on the 12th of September. But of course, with how well I manage to do with time zones, it turns out that with UTC, it's now actually the 13th of September. But regardless, I just wanted to wish all of Esperanza a very happy month-and-a-day-late Esperanza birthday! We have done some great things as Esperanzians, and I look forward to it continuing for a long while. Keep it up! -- Natalya 01:12, 13 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't like the new calendar. If there aren't any anniversaries, why do we have to have the thing say "user" "user" and "user" again? In fact, it might be easier to use an ifexist: thing when it is empty, which it should be if there are no anniversaries. People can follow guidelines if they want to create an appropriate page. Jfingers88 03:45, 17 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
The calendar is meant to be very simple and easy to use. The User was the first thing that I put in when I was reorganizing the calendar. I have sinced changed it to None as per Celestianpower's suggestion. The goal of the calendar is to have every event covered in the future. There are plenty of users who are not on the calendar, and a project would be to fill it up. I originally added User to make it simple for a future user to add in a name. – Heaven's Wrath   Talk  15:59, 17 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Most recent AC meeting and September elections

edit

The September AC meeting recently finished! A summary of the meeting can be found at the meeting information page, as well as in the newsletter that will soon go out, but just in case you miss it, here is the gist of things that happened:

 • The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
 • Since the program in development Appreciation week is getting lots of good ideas, it will be having a separate page made for it.
 • The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
 • The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
 • TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

Most notable on that list is the September 2006 Council elections! If you wish to be a part of the council, or to help with the election staff, please list yourself at the elections page.

 1. What page does it edit when you click "edit" on top right of the big green square?
 2. Do you have any problems with Portal:Architecture?

I've put up a temporary fix that incorporates the new material but works in Firefox and IE. I don't want to step on anyone's toes, but I think that a page that is visible to everyone is more important than a page that looks great to some but is unreadable to others. I hope this will serve while we figure out how to fix the other template. -- Merope Talk 22:06, 18 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I'm getting those now, too. What up? At any rate, tomorrow I'd like to look at Æon's sandbox version and play around with that, if it's okay. how about a navigation bar for Esperanza pages?

edit

We already have a navigation bar of sorts on the Esperanza main page... how about a small navigation bar on the various Esperanza subpages, such as this page, the Coffee Lounge, the Alerts pages, etc.? I know that people can go to the main page and then go to another section of Esperanza, but a navbar on each subpage would save a little time. Any thoughts on this? --Kyoko 13:55, 19 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I realize it isn't exactly what you meant, but I'll mod Che Nuevara's wiki navbar to include complete ESP navigation; it won't take me very long. Is there a guideline along the lines of Wikipedia:Be kind?

edit

Hi,

I just wrote a message to a user suggesting that he could have been kinder to an anonymous editor who was unaware of the WP:3RR rule by explaining the rule rather than asking for a block when the anon went over the 3RR limit. I suggested that, while users are under no obligation to warn other editors that they are about to violate the 3RR rule, it is a reasonable courtesy to expect.

I suppose this comes under the general rubric of "Don't bite the newbies" but I was wondering if there was a guideline that expressed the sentiment that I'm talking about.

--Richard 18:58, 20 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

WP:CIVIL, maybe? Kind of, anyway. Best, Moreschi 19:00, 20 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I think WP:BITE comes pretty close to what I had in mind. My point was that helping people understand what the rules are is more important than hitting them over the head with the penalty for violating a rule. Combined with WP:CIVIL, WP:BITE will do the trick for now. --Richard 19:17, 20 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

can you help me?

--Maxasus 07:58, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

We can certainly try, Maxasus! I'm sorry to hear that you're stressed out; hopefully we can help you to relax and make some constructive edits. Esperanza is about being friendly and creating a community for the editors in Wikipedia, so that we can be surrounded by truly helpful and nice people, and do a better job creating this encyclopedia. Though you'll probably want to be around Wikipedia a little while before officially joining us (take a look at the membership requirements), if you like what we're about and want to join us, you are welcome to add yourself to the list of editors who want to join, but don't meet the requirements yet.
As for stress, we have a ton of ways to help combat stress. The stress alerts page lists editors who, like you, are feeling pretty stressed out, for whatever reason. If you add yourself there, people can see that and drop by your talk page and add a supportive note or a suggestion or just a smile to help you out. We also have a wide variety of programs that help to strengthen the community and relax people.
I hope this helps - good luck! And if you ever have any questions, just ask; Esperanzians are really nice people, we'll always be glad to help. -- Natalya 11:29, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Elections update

edit

If you weren't already aware, the elections have concluded! If the elections staff could verify all the votes, that would be great, and then we can officially welcome the new Council members. Many thanks to all the candidates and everyone who participated! -- Natalya 00:11, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I forgot to mention it, but if whoever on the elections staff goes through the votes could just let us know here when they're done, that would work out nicely. Thanks! -- Natalya 17:34, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've checked all the votes for the election and everything seems to be in order. Canadian-Bacon t c e 20:50, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Lovely! Then I'd like to officially welcome Celestianpower, Shreshth91, and The Halo as the newest council members. Congratulations to everyone who ran in the elections, and thanks to everyone for supporting your fellow Esperanzians!
Since the Admin Gen is re-chosen by the council after every election, we will shortly be taking care of that (by email, since that worked out well last time), and will report as to what has been decided. -- Natalya 15:26, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Space on the talk page for introductions

edit

As much as I love hearing from all the new Esperanzians (I'm serious, too! :), the large number of new topics may be making the page rather long rather fast; how do people feel about creating one topic at the top for everyone to introduce themselves? That way, there will not be a whole host of new topics, but new members will still be able to be welcomed here. -- Natalya 11:31, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, a subpage will work fine. Joshua Chiew 13:14, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
We could do that too, but I imagine it wouldn't be as noticed as if it were on the main talk page (and therefore, people might feel like it was more of an obligation to check it than to see it here on the main page and welcome people). -- Natalya 16:19, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
We don't want to make it too confusing for new users, and many of the new Esperanzians who come to this page to say hello are also fairly new to Wikipedia. I would simply continue to let them post greetings threads here, but then some of us can archive those threads after about 3 days or so, while letting the threads on other topics for the full length of time. That would shorten the page without confusing any newbies. NoSeptember 21:35, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
I agree with NoSeptember - Che Nuevara 21:40, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
I say that we have a bot that archives our talk pages every 3 days or so. I know that WP:ANI uses a bot. Maybe we can ask the owner if he/she could program the bot to archive our page as well.--Edtalk c E 22:34, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Doesn't the Lounge use Werdnabot? Why not just use it here too? - Che Nuevara 23:22, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

(unindent)Werdnabot would be great! Once the AC is elected, then they may make that decision. Unless Natalya can make the immediate decision, of course...--Edtalk c E 23:38, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I found out what the bot for ANI is User:EssjayBot II run by Essjay. We must ask him for permission first.--Edtalk c E 01:44, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

We might not want to have an automatic archival or the talk page, just because some discussions can go on for longer than however many days it might be decided to have the automatic archival. I imagine that archiving the introduction messages would have to be done by hand, but it doesn't seem like it would be too hard, and pretty much anyone could take care of it. We could archive the introduction messages once they're five days (or any number) old, to be put in a section of the archives? -- Natalya 05:06, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just done it by hand. Automatic archival might archive on-going discussion and cause confusion. Joshua Chiew 06:42, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
I still think that Essjay's bot would work. You see, at ANI, the bot looks at the LAST TIMESTAMP in each incident report. If no one has responded on the ANI report within 24 hrs, then the bot will archive it. Same in this situation: as long as the discussion has been inactive for 3-5 days or so, then the bot can archive it. Everyone else is thinking that bots archive by looking at the FIRST post, but it's actually the LAST thread!--Edtalk c E 15:28, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Just a bit of clarification: Werdnabot does the same thing as EssjayBot II. If we already are using Werdnabot in the lounge, it might be easier to use the same bot for this page. Just to keep it simple. – Heaven's Wrath   Talk  22:24, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Werdnabot sounds like a good idea. Shall we do 7 days, similar to what the Coffee Lounge does? There are very few threads that ever have meaningful activity after seven days of nothing. -- Natalya 00:16, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Seven days sounds good to me. -- Cielomobile minor7♭5 00:30, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
7 days sounds good, too. Does this need Council approval, or can we just establish this? --Edtalk c E 01:26, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

It can certainly be just established! Anyone is free to be bold and implement it, but if not, I will take care of it. Good job of working out a great solution, everyone! You guys are awesome. -- Natalya 05:10, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I went to go put the code onto the page, but when I was comparing the Werdnabot instructions to how it is set up at the Coffee Lounge, they seem to differ; is it only because the Coffee Lounge isn't a talk page, or should the code be different here too? Thanks, all of you who understand this better than myself. -- Natalya 17:37, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
It's just because the Werdnabot instructions are substituted; I've tested it out on my user page and it seems to match that of Coffee Lounge. For the seven day time period as used on CL, use at the top of this page, and it should all sort itself out. Laïka 18:05, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
In order for me to establish Werdnabot, I changed the format for the future archives by Archive CURRENTMONTHABBREV CURRENTYEAR. That way, Werdnabot's archival will be a simple process.--Edtalk c E 00:25, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm considering joining Esperanza

edit

Since my one-week block (see my talk page for an explanation of why I was blocked) has expired, I am considering joining Esperanza. This is partially due to the influence of several Wikifriends who are Esperanza members (namely Imoeng, Richardshusr and Terence Ong). Another reason why I am considering joining is that I am often stressed by Wikipedia (don't get me wrong - I enjoy writing articles, but anonymous vandals are a real pain), and Esperanza would help me cope with my stress better, so I wouldn't go berserk and do things I regret later (such as the actions which lead to my block).

Here's some background information about me: I have been editing Wikipedia for 8 months, and according to Essjay's tool, I have 1113 edits. I created Requests for feedback, a process to help contributors seek feedback on new articles they have written. I am actively involved in writing (and re-writing) articles, and am a member of the Good Articles WikiProject.

Based on the background reason, and the reasons I have provided for wishing to join Esperanza, do you think I am suitable? If so, I will join, and I hope you'll make me feel welcome here.

--J.L.W.S. The Special One 10:50, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Anyone is welcome to join Esperanza, providing they meet the minimal membership requirements, which you do. As I'm sure you know, Esperanza works to create a positive community amongst editors; vandalizing things pretty much works against this. We will be glad to have you here, and hope that you can relax a bit with us, but remember that vandalism, or anything of the sort, is directly un-Esperanzian. -- Natalya 11:22, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Natalya, I understand that vandalism isn't Esperanzian. I hope that Esperanza can help me handle stress better, so I will not resort to WP:POINT violations or vandalism. Since Esperanza looks suitable for me, and I meet the membership requirements, how do I officially join? --J.L.W.S. The Special One 15:03, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hey, you've already done good things for Wikipedia and the blocking doesn't seem to be your fault. You get my support. Grab a cup of coffee! --Roninbk t c e # 12:19, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Coffee? I prefer Milo. But thanks for your support. I'm glad my contributions are appreciated. --J.L.W.S. The Special One 15:03, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Join? Just add your name to the member's list. Hey, even I've joined. No one escapes, so it seems. And the "coffee", I suspect, refers to the Coffee Lounge.
Mind you, you're darn lucky to be here at all. That kind of vandalism and WP:POINTism almost invariably gets people an indefban. Clearly the blocking admin was an enlightened individual who realised that you had more good stuff to contribute to WP. Moreschi 15:30, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yep, just add yourself to the members list. If you interested in stress relief, you might be interested in the stress alerts page, as well as the stressbusters program. -- Natalya 15:49, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mascot

edit

There's a semi-serious poll at Coffee Lounge about creating an Esperanza mascot (so far, the contest is between a lemming and a wombat). Should it be moved here to make the poll 'official'? Laïka 16:18, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I imagine we should find out if the general Esperanza community wants as mascot first... -- Natalya 17:24, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. Nevertheless, should we set up a poll, even just "Should Esperanza have a mascot?" at this stage? Laïka 17:42, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
It seems like a good idea to start a poll either now, or after the results of the elections have been made offical as the reaction at the coffee lounge seems to warrent this idea being looked at closer by everyone (and for anyone who hasn't seen, go check out some of the ideas there, especially the Mortal Wombat, whom I love ;) Thε Halo Θ 17:47, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I fully support the creation of a mascot, if we can find something cool. Any suggestions?--Chili14 01:41, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

After seeing that several users I've come in contact with were part of Esperanza, I decided to check it out. As I read about it, I felt that it was a great idea. Too many times on Wikipedia I've seen a newbie who made a mistake, as I'm sure we all did when we were new, get scared away from Wikipedia. I've also seen too many cases of incivility. I want to help reverse that, in the most civil way possible. I also want to reward deserving people for their work, especially if it goes unnoticed. I've been a member of Wikipedia for over a year now, but until recently I didn't have a home internet connection. Since I can access Wikipedia more often, I feel I have time to start getting involved in the wiki community. Esperanza is very fast at welcoming people. I was a member for less than 5 minutes when I got my welcome message. I'm glad to be a part of this community, and look forward to getting more involved in it. Username switching

edit

Hello everybody. I would just like to tell you all that I have decided to switch my usage of the Wiki to this not-so-new account. I am the same person as Chili14, but now I am known as Chilifix. This account will be used for reverting vandalism, and to work on getting a certain article to Featured Article. I am ineligible to sign up for Esperanza again, as I do not have 500 edits. I will wait until it is the right time to sign up again. I have watchlisted this page and other essential EA pages, so I will know exactly what's going on. I will use Chili14 again, I just want to stretch the muscles of this one. Expect to see me a lot on Recent Changes patrol. Thank you and have a nice day.--Chilifix 05:17, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Chilifix, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank for your contributions. We hope you like it here and decide to stay.
Oh, you say that you're not a new user? Well, never mind then. Thank you all the same, and if you respond to this message, that will mean that you will be one edit closer to reaching the minimum requirements of joining Esperanza. BTW, I think that the requirements are for 150 edits, not 500 as you stated on the Esperanza talk page.
This message has been copied to Chilifix's talk page for its humourous content. --Kyoko 06:05, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
It's good to see that you are experiencing some humor now, after what you have been through. Keep it up!!--Chilifix 22:41, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much, Chilifix. I feel better emotionally than I have for a long time. --Kyoko 06:11, 15 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Newsletter question

edit

Are non-members allowed to get the newsletter delivered? Just wondering.--Chilifix 19:25, 16 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

No. You see, the newsletter is delivered by bot to everyone on the members' list. So to get the newsletter, you must be on the members' list.--EdI'm lonely, talk to me contribs 21:55, 16 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
If they are interested in the updates, they can always watch Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter, which will be updated with every new newsletter. -- Natalya 02:26, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, just did.--Chilifix 12:17, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Humor

Who wants some humor? I'll have you roll on the floor laughing your *** off! •Sean•gorter•(T) (P) 11:22, 18 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm all for humor, but no profanity.--Chilifix 01:45, 19 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, the place where your humour will be best appreciated will be the Coffee Lounge. I suggest you direct your comments there. Cheers! --May the Force be with you! Shreshth91 14:07, 19 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Actively trying to be funny isn't as effective. I prefer spontaneous humor. --RoninBKETC 18:00, 19 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Is there a page which lists lots of jokes about Wikipedia? --J.L.W.S. The Special One 14:19, 23 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
How about WP:BJAODN? I remember there used to be one in wikibooks, but it got deleted. --May the Force be with you! Shreshth91 14:22, 23 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
