Wikipedia Takes Kolkata is a one day photo scavenger hunt, held almost every year in the city Kolkata, India. This is the sixth season of the annual event and this year we have planned it on 29 January 2017. Anyone can participate in this event, regardless of photographic ability, and whether or not they are a Wikimedian or a member of Wikimedia India. But this year we are concentrating on increasing conversion rate of relevant photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, so that photos can be used in existing Wikipedia articles which need pictures, especially those related to the area Baranagar, which we will be photographing during the Wikipedia Takes Kolkata VI season. Also focusing on, creating new articles for Wikipedia Bengali with the help of those photographs. This year we will also try to capture as many videos as possible.

Report

edit

Wikipedia Takes Kolkata VI saw participation of 20 photographers. Half of them were attending Wikipedia Takes ... for the first time.

After a round of tea, and before the walk started, a brief intro on Wikipedia, Commons and the aim of this photowalk was given by Sumit Surai. He also mentioned there would be a photo contest this time, and explained the rules in detail. The after walk workshop plan was also announced by him.

Indrajit Das then distributed a printed list of the places which would be covered, along with a short write up and image of each (Download the soft copy here). He then gave a brief introduction of the places which will be covered in the first phase before everyone started heading for the first destination Adi Chiteswari Temple.

After covering the first three destinations a breakfast break was taken just opposite to the main entrance of Cossipore Udyan Bati. The menu was Kochuri-Torkari, Jilipi and Tea. The team then proceeded towards the remaining destinations.

After completing the walk everyone took auto rickshaws and reached Banjara, a restaurant near Sinthi. It was booked for the post walk workshop and lunch. Here Rangan Datta gave a brief talk on how Wikimedia Foundation works and how to organize a successful event. Indrajit Das and Sumit Surai helped the new users create their Wikipedia accounts and afterwards a training on how to upload media to commons correctly giving all the details was given by Sumit Surai. Rangan Datta helped in between with his experience explaining the importance of categories.

Post workshop lunch was served. It consisted of Egg Noodles and Chilli Chicken. Networking and knowledge sharing continued over lunch, after which it was time to bid goodbye to each other.
