This class introduces students to the interdisciplinary field of Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Issues to be covered include: transnational, intersectional and antiracist approaches and methodologies; the social construction of gender and sexuality; the gender and sexual politics of everyday life; and the gender and sexual politics of colonialisms, imperialisms, nationalisms and decoloniality. Specific attention is paid to the contributions and critiques of feminist of color to feminist theory, methods, and activism.
The purpose of this assignment is to give students the opportunity to actively engage in the creation/maintenance of knowledge(s) focusing on feminism/feminist theory/feminist activism. Evaluating and editing a Wikipedia page will give students an opportunity to engage in public pedagogy.
Much in the same way Wikipedia democratized the information and knowledge contained within traditional encyclopedias and archives, public pedagogy seeks to disrupt disciplinary boundaries and challenge the traditional methods of knowledge production and dissemination within the academy. By incorporating research, theories, and ideas generated outside of academia, public pedagogy also challenges whose voices are privileged in the construction/production of knowledge. Finally, public pedagogy not only seeks to open the conversation between disciplines, but it also seeks to create a dialogue between subject and researcher; between those who traditionally construct research and knowledge and those who are traditionally the subject of research.
This project will allow students to practice traditional research skills and require them to utilize/develop their critical thinking skills while critically engaging a broader (mostly nonacademic) in topics and subjects they may not have the opportunity to explore outside of an academic setting.
