Climate change and airports

edit

Hey, I am looking for a coloured version of the Climate-proofing the airport of the future. I already got the greyscale version of the article through interlibrary loan but they don't offer the coloured version. The figure in page 4 is meaningless without colour. I'm planning to add contents to Economic impacts of climate change. If you have access to that journal and could download the coloured version, please pass me a copy. --OhanaUnitedTalk page 16:37, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@OhanaUnited: I've downloaded a copy from EBSCO, but I'm not sure if the colors are what you are looking for. The figure for page 4 is mostly brown with some green and gray. Is that what you're looking for? If so, email me for a copy. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 18:40, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@MrLinkinPark333: Thanks, I have sent you an email. My greyscale version doesn't even show green (and brown & green appear almost identical in greyscale), so it sounds like you got a coloured version. OhanaUnitedTalk page 23:34, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@OhanaUnited: Sent. Please let me know if the copy is good or not. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 00:31, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

OhanaUnited, you may want to contact the author, Rachel Burbidge. The first part of her email address is her name, with a dot separating the forename and surname, and the domain is eurocontrol.int. James Craven

edit

{{stale}} A new editor has been persistently editing James Craven (American actor) to insert and reinsert unsourced information that contradicts the article's only existing source, such as that he was born in Canada rather than Pennsylvania and that he died about 20 years later than claimed — and their only "source" for the changed information is "I knew him" (which isn't convincing if we can't prove that who the editor really knew isn't some other person who merely happened to have the same name). But conversely, the article's only existing source is his IMDb profile, which isn't considered a reliable source either because it can also contain errors.

I've protected the article for the time being, but since the vast majority of his roles listed in the IMDb profile seem to be minor supporting roles and/or entirely uncredited appearances as unnamed characters, it's not even clear that he would pass WP:NACTOR at all — but a proper WP:BEFORE test would require checking American media of the 1940s and 1950s, whereas I only have access to Canadian newspaper databases for that era (in which I've found nothing at all.) So could somebody with historical US newspaper access (probably any database with a reasonably broad range of publications would work) run a sourcing check to see if the article's an WP:AFD candidate or not? Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 15:07, 14 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have ready access to the full text, but this looks worth seeking out: Seymour, Blackie (2010). "Names to Faces". Films of the Golden Age. No. 63. pp. 80–85. ISSN 1083-5369. Abstract: This article offers a list of little-known character actors who were featured during Hollywood's Golden Age. It looks at the life and career of Arthur Edmund Carewe, who appeared in both silent and sound films such as "Phantom of the Opera," "The Matrimonial Bed," and "Captain Applejack." It then focuses on James Craven, who was notable for portraying in serials such as "The Green Archer," "Captain Midnight," and "The Purple Monster Strikes." The article then shows a short biography of Robert Frazer, who starred in "The Holy City," and "The Drake Case." --Worldbruce (talk) 21:49, 15 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Bearcat: Are you interested in working on this article? If so, I can seek the text of the article for you. If not, I think we can close this. ~ Rob13Talk 17:34, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Need help finding an article

edit

{{stale}} I need some help finding an article. Basically, I don't remember what this article is called or the newspaper (or journal) that it was from, but I am pretty sure that it was written sometime between 1903 and 1915 (Yes, somewhere between those specific years) and talked about the possibility of a U.S. acquisition of one of the main islands in the Danish West Indies while leaving the rest of these islands to Denmark. Can anyone find this article?

Indeed, I want to add this information to this specific Wikipedia article: Treaty of the Danish West Indies. Futurist110 (talk) 00:54, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A quick look at ProQuest Historical Newspapers does not immediately find any discussions during this period of the Danish West Indies being split up. Of course, it's entirely plausible that someone made the suggestion at some point, but if so, it doesn't seem to have received much attention. John M Baker (talk) 14:15, 17 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Futurist110, there's plenty of coverage of the sale in The New York Times starting with rumors in December 1899, but it's veering on historical research to sort through all of it, as I started to do. I imagine you'd be best off starting with a monograph on the history of the U.S. Virgin Islands so you can find some names (or other concrete, identifying information) associated with this supposed event and work backwards through the sources. czar 09:19, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Anything at all. Newspaper archives? Book reviews? Obituaries? James Thrower seems like a notable person and wrote a lot of books which are still referred to. When (exactly) and where was he born? What did he do during his early life? When (exactly) and how did he die? Anything else interesting. --John (talk) 17:29, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

John, I might take a further look later, but here are some places to start:
1999 book is dedicated to "my daughter Annabel"
Married to Judith
More dedications, apparently to his children
Haven't found an obit, and a brief look through proquest historical newspapers and newspapers.com didn't turn up anything. His various works might contain some biographical info, and finding a middle name (initial seems to have been "A") would help. --Usernameunique (talk) 17:54, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, that's a fantastic start. I think I can add the wife and daughters. --John (talk) 18:34, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
John, here's more. Full name is James Arthur Thrower (see first link).
Ph.D. in 1981 from Aberdeen, dissertation entitled "Marxist-Leninist 'Scientific Atheism' and the Study of Religion and Atheism in the USSR Today". Published in 1983, here's a review.
Bio, gives some more places he taught (and should help in ordering them) and a list of works (confirming that the above Ph.D. is his).
First Amazon review gives some more places he taught. Not sure if it's from a bio with the work, or if the review is by someone who knew something about him, but at least gives some more search terms to try.
"About the Author" from one of his books, includes visiting lecturer appointments
Various letters to the editor. One of them mentions returning from "a cultural visit to Libya" where he met Muammar Gaddafi and others: 1 (note his own Durham->Oxford path), 2, 3 (a colleague responded to that one)
Review of one of his works
Preface to one of his works gives the name of a grandson (Liam David James MacDonald), and, interestingly, is dated December 1999.
Much of that was discovered by searching for 'James Thrower Ghana'. It would be worth searching using other terms (e.g., 'James Thrower Leningrad,' 'James Thrower Libya,' or 'James Arthur Thrower'). You would probably also glean more information by putting a list of his works together. Especially if he published before the 1970s, the bylines would give a better sense of his movements. The snippet view of the introduction of his posthumous 2004 work also suggests it may contain some more information (as may the introduction by Malise Ruthven). --Usernameunique (talk) 19:43, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again for the legwork. I can't access the galegroup links unfortunately. I already have the bio from the dictionary on the article. Bits there I can use. I have emailed the Aberdeen Press and Journal to see if they are willing to help; he would undoubtedly have merited an obituary there. --John (talk) 19:56, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
John, no problem. Email me and I'll send you the galegroup items. --Usernameunique (talk) 20:00, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello everyone! I'm creating the Portuguese version of Ozegya Adi Obanseriki (there isn't an article about him here yet) and during my search for sources I found one with that name on the title. It's a group os lists with names of rulers of Nigeria before British conquest and the page that mentions Ozegya appears only partially on Google. It's page 62. I would like to have access to the entire page to see what list it is, because if I don't know the reason for the list I can't mention it on the article. Any signficant coverage of him or his book "Black and Brown Faces in America's Natural Places" from the source above (or others, but this is one of my last hopes), if there is such coverage, would be appreciated. Or a note that there isn't signficant coverage would be appreciated if that's the case. Thanks! --joe deckertalk 16:59, 22 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Double checking a 1989 Publishers Weekly review

edit

{{resolved}}

Hello. I would like to check if this hardcopy version is the same as this online one:

  • Steinberg, Sybil (10 February 1989). "Night Launch". Publishers Weekly. Vol. 235, no. 6. pp. 56+..

The website says it was revised on April 30, 1989 but there isn't an issue on that date according to Gale. If the review is on the 10 february 1989 issue, I don't need a scanned copy, just a confirmation. This is to be used for Night Launch. Thanks. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 17:53, 19 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@MrLinkinPark333: The microfilm copy of the review on pages 56-57 of the 10 February 1989 issue is identical to the online one except that the former uses italics for book titles and the words glasnost and amour. I checked the April 28 issue and the first issue of May, but found no letters to the editor or corrections that might account for the April 30 date in the website details. --Worldbruce (talk) 03:00, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. I'll use the 10 February date. Probably like the Kirkus review below, the online date is off. Thanks again. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 03:15, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • "Pilgermann". Kirkus Reviews. 15 March 1983. p. 325.

Hello again. I was adding reviews to Pilgermann and ran into a problem. The online copy of Kirkus says the review was published in the 1 April 1983 issue of Kirkus but Gale is telling me it was in 15 March 1983. I would like to check which one is the right date, and if the review are the same. Thanks again. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 21:02, 19 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@MrLinkinPark333: The review in the 15 March 1983 issue (pp. 325-326) matches the one online. There is no second review or correction in the physical 1 April 1983 issue, so I don't know where kirkusreviews.com came up with that date. --Worldbruce (talk) 02:36, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Journal of the British Tarantula Society, 2 papers

edit

Hello,

I'm in need of the following papers, from the Journal of the British Tarantula Society, to improve/write de:Heterometrus and de:Heterometrus swammerdami. Unfortunately, the journal is not held by any public library in Germany:

  1. Hull-Williams, V.: A brief description of the collection and appearance of Heterometrus gigantometrus swammerdami titanicus in Sri Lanka. In: Journal of the British Tarantula Society, 1989, 5 (1): 12–14.
  2. Pointer, M.: The genus Heterometrus and the family Scorpionidae. In: Journal of the British Tarantula Society, 1991, 7 (2): 23–25.

Thank you for caring, --Cimbail (talk) 22:04, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I can get the second paper around the middle of the week. The first one looks tricky to get to though. – Uanfala (talk) 11:55, 4 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
For some unfathomable reason, the library has failed to retrieve the journal from their offsite store. I'm requesting it again, and it should arrive by Monday Thursday, fingers crossed. – Uanfala (talk) 14:46, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the library doesn't seem to have that unfortunately. – Uanfala (talk) 15:04, 16 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I have contacted the BTS a while ago, at another mail address. It seems that their website is a long-term construction site, but the organization is still active with an annual convention in March. I will try the new mail address after checking my records for other BTS papers of interest. Trying to find photo and its caption in No, Daddy, Don’t!: A Father's Murderous Act Of Revenge: A Father's Murderous Act of Revenge

edit

In the following for John Battaglia:

  • Irene Pence. No, Daddy, Don’t!: A Father's Murderous Act Of Revenge: A Father's Murderous Act of Revenge. Pinnacle Books (any addition will do!)

I want to see if this picture File:Battagliafamily.png appears in the book, on what page and in what edition, and I would like to know the caption. That way I can add critical commentary on this photo.

Anonymous users keep removing it on the grounds it's immoral or inappropriate to show the daughters with their murderer. However I found this:

  • From No, Daddy, Don’t!: A Father's Murderous Act Of Revenge: A Father's Murderous Act of Revenge by Irene Pence PT107: "They reached the office that belonged to John Battaglia. In the corner on top of a file cabin sat sat a photo in which he knelt, smiling, with both arms around his daughters. The terrible irony of the picture struck everyone. Thornton picked up the photo to use for identification of the suspect."

Multiple reliable sources noted that Battaglia portrayed himself as a loving father, and Mary Jean Pearle stated that she didn't believe Battaglia was a threat to the girls because he never hit them or raised his voice at them. I'm hoping the caption will address this.

That along with the Wikipedia:NFCC requirement of having as few nonfree photos as possible per article (no known free photos of Battaglia nor the girls exist) should help here... --WhisperToMe (talk) 19:10, 6 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If someone could possibly get me a copy of page 301, that would be great. I believe I had this book at some point in the past to create the results table at South West African legislative election, 1926, but someone has recently changed the results table (leaving it sourced to the book) so I need to double check. Historic BBC periodical (1971), digitised and available (?) through Gale Cengage

edit

{{resolved}}

I would like access to BBC The Listener, then a weekly UK magazine, Thursday 25 March 1971, Volume 85 no 2191, page 373. It was supposedly available digitised through Gale Cengage.

The ref is used in Café racer, appearing in the lede as inline citation box [1]. The ref was added in May, 2012 to existing prose from October 2010; the term "transport caff" was also added in 2012.

I obtained a jpeg of the cover, which shows a type of index to writers/subject/page numbers in the header. It may be relating to Randolph Quirk: "BBC English", maybe pp.372-373. Based on the prose added, the page(s) should relate to 'caff' or 'transport caff'. As a specialist editor it would help if I could see this for myself, if feasible, to ascertain what part of the prose is verified. Thank you.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 22:59, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

{{resolved}} Wondering if someone with access to old newspaper archives from the UK can help here. I'm looking for an article from the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer, 13 June 1929, reporting the wedding of D'Arcy Melville Stephens to Isobel Young McGowan. I'm trying to find the name of the groom's mother, which I need for the biography of the groom's brother, Ian Stephens (editor). Many thanks, SarahSV (talk) 18:30, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@SlimVirgin:, I've found the article but it doesn't mention groom's parents at all. Nthep (talk) 18:44, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Add, the Times just refers to the groom's parents as Mr & Mrs J.A. Melville Stephens so no luck there either. Nthep (talk) 18:50, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Nthep: thank you for looking. This is really quite infuriating. His obituary in The Times in 1984 also only mentioned his father. Mum = nameless vessel. Is there a headline on the Yorkshire Post article that I would need to write the citation? I can use it to support his brother's name. SarahSV (talk) 19:18, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request for biography of Camilla Mickwitz

Hello, I am writing an English article about Camilla Mickwitz. She has a Finnish article at [3]. One of citations that used is:

Unfortunately, this article at [4] costs 2€, and is the most in depth article about her that I could find. If anyone can find a free version, or an equivalent biography, it would be most appreciated.

I have not had success finding them myself, but... is this the author of the two remaining publications? They seem to at least have very related research interests, and are listed as working at Chalmers University of Technology.
I've been impressed with the success rate of requesting full-text publications of authors directly via Research Gate. You may consider doing so if you have an account, and mentioning your use of the publications. I find it hard to believe any researcher would not want more citations, especially in something as widely used as Wikipedia :-) = paul2520 (talk) 17:22, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
