Welcome to the Canadian cinema task force of WikiProject Films!
Scope
editThe Canadian cinema task force is a joint task force of WikiProject Films and WikiProject Canada for the purpose of gathering interested editors in the common purpose of improving Wikipedia coverage of the Canadian cinema and raising the quality of already-existing articles.
Canadian cinema may include not only domestic films, but also films made by Canadian filmmakers outside of the region, films produced or co-produced by Canadian companies, and foreign films shooting within Canada. However per Wikipedia:WikiProject Film#Scope, this task force should not include articles about actors, directors and filmmakers. Those articles are covered by adding parameters for the Actors and Filmmakers and Screenwriters projects accordingly.

editCalendar
editMany events which are key to this project occur on a cyclical annual basis:
- Early year: Canadian Screen Award nominations are typically released at some time within the first three months of the year; a precise date can usually be found at academy.ca. Also monitor the Academy Award nominations in case one or more Canadian films garner nominations.
- February: CSA winners in a few of the special non-juried categories (Golden Screen, Special Achievement, etc.) will be announced at this time.
- March: CSA winners are announced.
- April: Prix Iris nominations usually announced around this time. Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.
- May: Monitor coverage of the Cannes Film Festival for Canadian films which may be screened there. Coverage of the Inside Out Film and Video Festival will also point to some Canadian LGBT films that could or should be covered in Wikipedia; first film announcements for the Fantasia Film Festival are also typically expected in May or June.
- August: The main Canadian film festival circuit swings into gear. Start watching for programming announcements from the Toronto International Film Festival, the Atlantic Film Festival, Cinéfest and other film festivals in Canada. Many films will overlap across more than one such festival, although some will not.
- Fall: Watch for the announcement of Canada's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This usually takes place in September, but has sometimes been announced as early as August.
- September: Most of the major film festivals will be held. Watch for coverage of their final award announcements.
- October: Most of the remaining major film festivals will be held; watch again for coverage of their final award announcements.
- December: Awards and honours announced include the Vancouver and Toronto Film Critics Association awards, TIFF's Canada's Top Ten (and/or their once-a-decade Top 10 Canadian Films of All Time poll), and the Borsos Competition at the Whistler Film Festival.
To-do
edit- Requested articles
- List of missing Canadian films
- Expansion needed
- Cinema of Canada
- Tag articles.
- Recruit interested editors.
- Collect categories, resource links, and templates.
- Expand the open task listing above.
- Improve referencing when you find a Canadian film article that is poorly referenced.
- Check Canadian Screen Award and Prix Iris category articles for films and/or people whose articles are still red links.
- Lists in Category:Lists of Canadian films by year are incomplete; often they're missing many films that do already have Wikipedia articles to link to, and even films that are listed haven't always had all the relevant details filled in on the table. They also need to have references added; as older wikipractices did not require lists to be referenced, while contemporary wikipractices do, lists from 2017 and earlier either do not have references at all, or have had a few references selectively added here and there but have not been comprehensively referenced across the board.
- Address outstanding redlinks in Wikipedia:WikiProject Film/List of films without article/List of missing Canadian films.
- Cinémas Guzzo is a stub article that has been subject to graffiti recently. Some info has been rolled back, but key people in sidebar keeps getting vandalized and needs fixing (again)
- Gemini Award articles remain in need of formatting and referencing improvement.
- Add things here!
Film festivals
editPrior to 2020, TIFF was the only Canadian film festival for which anybody had actually compiled full by-year articles for each individual year's edition of the festival — but with that year having left a lot of extra time on everybody's hands, it began to be expanded to a number of other festivals as well. However, TIFF remains the only Canadian film festival for which articles exist for every year all the way back to the beginning.
Festivals which have at least one by-year article in place are:
- Toronto International Film Festival — Although articles exist for every year, the older articles in particular are not necessarily always complete, and films are not necessarily always correctly sorted for which program they screened in. Program books do still need to be located so that each article can be reviewed for comprehensiveness and accuracy.
- Vancouver International Film Festival — By-year articles exist since 2014, as full program books were posted to Issuu for those years, but this project has not yet located program books in order to complete 1982 through 2013.
- Atlantic International Film Festival — By-year articles exist only since 2023. Program books needed to complete prior years.
- Calgary International Film Festival — A by-year article exists for 2023 only; 2024 was never finished due to problems with the way the website was organized that year making it difficult to figure out which films were actually in some programming streams. Program books needed to complete 2024 and prior years.
- Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival — By-year articles exist since 2020. Program books needed to complete prior years.
- Fantasia Film Festival — A by-year article was created for the first time in 2024. Program books needed to complete prior years.
- Festival du nouveau cinéma — By-year articles exist since 2020. 2015 through 2019 are also available from the previous editions section of its website — note that 2015 and 2017 appear to be missing from that page, but do turn up if you click on another year's edition and then change the year to 2017 or 2015 in its URL, but this trick doesn't work for 2014 and earlier. Program books needed to complete other years.
No other festival currently has such articles, but some (especially Hot Docs, Inside Out and Montreal World) might be viable if full program information can be found.
