Last week's report | Next week's report

It's one of those reports where basically all subjects from the previous week have returned, even with new pages added to the reminders: the Marvel superheroes (#4, #13) have some new movies in sight (#8, #11, #20, #23) to ensure Disney keeps making all the money in the world (#2); the top box office film (#3) is followed by second place (#6); there are now two beloved figures with biopics (#10, #19); the most famous Moon mission (#5, #21) has the company of a just launched one (#9); a Netflix hit series (#16) is joined by two other streaming shows (#17, #22); and there's the most prominent addition (#7) to the yearly death list (#12). And you can always expect some new entries when politics (#1, #14) and sports (#18, #24) get involved.

For the week of July 21 to 27, 2019, the 25 most popular articles on Wikipedia, as determined from the WP:5000 report were:

Rank Article Class Views Image About
1 Boris Johnson   2,346,109

Boris Johnson, the man who wished to be "world king" only to get caught on a zip wire during the 2012 Summer Olympics, and a notable figure in the Vote Leave campaign three years ago, has been elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after winning the Conservative Party leadership election. Once referred to as "Britain Trump" by The Donald himself, Johnson is a rather controversial figure in British politics. Supporters have praised him as humorous, witty, and entertaining, and his critics have accused him of lying, elitism, cronyism and bigotry. He does have a clear track record of lying on several occasions, with Johnson once being fired from one of his previous jobs as a reporter for lying about an affair. Brexit has been an issue that has defined Johnson over the last three years, and if his predecessors are anything to go by, it looks like it will play a big factor in Johnson's premiership as well.
2 List of highest-grossing films   1,621,771

In the latest news regarding The Walt Disney Company owning movie-going wallets:

Add Captain Marvel, Toy Story 4 and our #13 (a Disney co-production) also broke or are near the billion mark as well, and it's pretty clear why people think The House Mickey Built is turning into a monopoly.

3 The Lion King (2019 film)   1,450,985

4 Avengers: Endgame   1,195,547

5 Neil Armstrong   1,066,750

One day before the week covered by this report marked the 50th anniversary of Lieutenant Armstrong's historic walk on the moon.
6 Once Upon a Time in Hollywood   993,125

From a 1969 event to a movie set in 1969, revolving around the Tate murders (only the movie turns them into the Manson family murders). As a movie fan that never cared for its auteur Quentin Tarantino, it doesn't interest me. Still, his fans made Once Upon a Time in Hollywood number two at the box office behind our #3.
7 Rutger Hauer   947,014

Just like his most famous role, Roy Batty of Blade Runner (of a career with many other notable movies, such as Ladyhawke, The Hitcher and Batman Begins), this Dutch actor also died in the year 2019 - although given he wasn't a Replicant with a four-year lifespan, Hauer lived up to 75.
8 List of Marvel Cinematic Universe films   841,975

San Diego Comic-Con served to finally confirm the next releases in Marvel Studios' license to print money: next year there's the Black Widow solo movie (a prequel, for reasons clear to anyone who's seen our #4) and The Eternals (#11), while 2021 offers Shang-Chi (#20), and sequels to Doctor Strange and Thor: Ragnarok.
9 Chandrayaan-2   833,621

Ever since the end of the Apollo program (#5, #21), the Moon has only been visited by unmanned missions, including this recently launched one by India.
10 Fred Rogers   810,628 A trailer has been released for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, where Mr. Rogers is portrayed by another certified Hollywood nice guy, Tom Hanks.
11 Eternals (comics)   771,946

Along with Black Widow, the other MCU movie of 2020 stars these characters created by Jack Kirby (pictured), humanoid aliens set to defend Earth against the evil Deviants.
12 Deaths in 2019   762,382

Better use a famous epitaph said and partially written by our #7:
13 Spider-Man: Far From Home   663,479

The only Marvel Cinematic Universe movies not fully owned by Disney are the Spider-Man ones, given Columbia Pictures have held onto the Webhead ever since the 2002 movie. And the latest one, where Peter Parker's European trip goes wrong, has grossed a billion dollars to figure into the list at #2.
14 Robert Mueller   653,431

The U.S. Congress has been hearing the former head of the FBI who wrote an extensive report regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election.
15 Area 51   572,605

Millions have answered a jokey Facebook event about going to this Nevada air base in search for aliens. Seems like a disaster waiting to happen.
16 Stranger Things   545,026

Speaking of secret government facilities, this Netflix hit show has had a few in the 1980s related to researching (and unwillingly letting loose) a hellish alternate dimension, from both the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
17 The Boys (2019 TV series)   520,359

More superhero adaptations, only on streaming, originally from an imprint of Marvel's Distinguished Competition (and later, Dynamite Entertainment), and taking a dark approach, as Garth Ennis' series about vigilantes going after arrogant and corrupt powered people becomes an Amazon Prime series starring Karl Urban (pictured).
18 Shane Lowry (golfer)   513,639

This Irish golfer won his first major with 2019 Open Championship.
19 Freddie Mercury   509,038

Regarding this iconic frontman's run on this report, I can just sing "I've been with you such a long time..."
20 Shang-Chi   508,504

As if Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming Eternals (#11) weren't already deep cuts into the Marvel heroes, the latest obscure superhero to get a movie out of him is this "Master of Kung Fu", set to be portrayed by Simu Liu in a 2021 feature.
21 Apollo 11   503,903

The mission that back in 1969 made our #5 and Buzz Aldrin the first humans on the Moon.
22 Money Heist   470,254

Netflix revealed to the world this Spanish series about thieves raiding the local mint (which is why the original title is The House of Paper), whose newest season has just premiered. Maybe this will serve as excuse for me to finally watch it, given the series has been on my radar ever since huge views on my native language's Wiki.
23 Marvel Cinematic Universe   453,118

Along with all those upcoming movies (#8, #11, #20), Marvel has laid details for webseries in the upcoming Disney+ streaming service, and that Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is attached to a Blade project (after all, better give love to the hero in the first successful Marvel movie).
24 Manny Pacquiao   446,894

An elected senator of the Philippines, Pacquiao could just leave his former day job as a boxer, but has just regained one of his titles after defeating Keith Thurman.
25 Jeffrey Epstein   441,523

Charles Manson, whose most infamous crime inspired our #6 entry, missed the list behind this just imprisoned sex offender who might not cause murders, but proves himself weirder and creepier by the day.
