Celebratory Noise Making?

edit

Can someone point toward the state regulations regarding celebratory noise making in NY and NJ? For example, what law code covers intentionally using one's car alarm to signal joy in NJ, or banging pots and pans in NYC for the same reason? Thanks. μηδείς (talk) 02:32, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

For New York, this page [1] links to [2] which mentions (page 10):

No person shall make, continue or cause or permit to be made or continued any unreasonable noise[, except that this section shall not apply to any sound from any source where the decibel level of such sound is within the limits prescribed by another section of this title and where there is compliance with all other applicable requirements of law with respect to such sound].

Unreasonable noise shall include but shall not be limited to sound, attributable to any device, that exceeds the following prohibited noise levels:

Impulsive sound, attributable to the source, measured at a level of 15 dB(A) or more above the ambient sound level, as measured at any point within a receiving property or as measured at a distance of 15 feet or more from the source on a public right-of-way. Impulsive sound levels shall be measured in the A-weighting network with the sound level meter set to fast response. The ambient sound level shall be taken in the A-weighting network with the sound level meter set to slow response.

The definition of 34 (page 4) suggests impulsive sound may cover the use of pots and pans (but this is not legal advice). I can't see anything specifically covering the usage of pot and pans (or anything else) for celebration so I don't think there's any general allowance or limit otherwise. One problem is the PDF seems to be an unOCRed image PDF meaning you'll need to OCR it to search. For example, containers are defined, but I'm not sure why.
24-237 (page 20) seems to cover using a car horn. I suspect, but am lazy to check, that this is also covered by traffic regulations although perhaps these won't apply in a private car park whereas the section on using the car horn doesn't mention public right of way as some other sections limit themselves to. There is also mention of air horns installed in vehicles later.

P.S. I should clarify my link is for NYC not New York state. Nil Einne (talk) 15:45, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, all. NYC is fine for my case. As it turned out, I went to sleep at 11 once the outcome was fairly clear, and was not going to make any noise at the late hour that they declared Penna. μηδείς (talk) 19:45, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Should measuring cups of instant rice be tapped to cause settling?

edit

Is this a convention for all cup ingredients that don't specify settled, not settled, tamped etc.? Sagittarian Milky Way (talk) 21:00, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think there is a convention, but if it doesn't say "packed", I wouldn't pack it in. StuRat (talk) 22:55, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Elections

edit

Will there be a recount in any state following yesterday's Presidential election? (For the record, I know that a recount won't change the result, and I don't wish for a change in the result because I'm glad that Trump won -- I'm only asking because I've seen some conflicting data on the vote percentages in AZ, MI and NH.) 2601:646:8E01:7E0B:F88D:DE34:7772:8E5B (talk) 23:44, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Every state has different rules. Read this for more information about each state's mandatory recount rules. --Jayron32 23:50, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) According to our article on election recounts, recounts in some jurisdictions are mandatory if the numbers are close enough. Specific info on the states you mentioned: Arizona recount laws (automatically triggered by a close vote); Article on Michigan recounts, recount laws (automatically triggered by a close vote or initiated by candidates or voters); New Hampshire recount laws (initiated by candidates or voters). clpo13(talk) 23:52, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! So, no recount in Arizona (the results are close, but not that close), and not in New Hampshire either unless the Hildabeast requests one (which she won't bother with because it won't change the outcome) -- right? 2601:646:8E01:7E0B:F88D:DE34:7772:8E5B (talk) 23:58, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Correction: if there is to be a recount in NH, it would be because Trump, not Hellary, would request it -- but the effect is the same, there won't be a recount in NH because Trump won anyway with or without it. 2601:646:8E01:7E0B:F88D:DE34:7772:8E5B (talk) 01:38, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
For the third time, take it somewhere else. --Jayron32 13:26, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That's a BLP violation. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots02:12, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No it's not because this is not a biographical article! 2601:646:8E01:7E0B:F88D:DE34:7772:8E5B (talk) 02:56, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
BLP violations are not allowed anywhere on Wikipedia. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:17, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And in any case, merely to call Clinton "Hildabeast" is NOT in itself a BLP violation (any more than your calling Trump an "elitist" and claiming that any woman who supports him has no self-respect)! 2601:646:8E01:7E0B:F88D:DE34:7772:8E5B (talk) 03:53, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Both Trump and Hillary qualify as elitists. As for nicknames for Trump, there's an endless list. And it would appear that your version of "self-respecting" women have some subliminal desire for Trump to grab them (as he himself talked about doing). Hence Bill Maher's comment that GOP now stands for "Grab Our Pussies". ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots05:02, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
WRONG -- they support him because of his stance on the ISSUES (pro-life, pro-economic growth, anti-immigration, anti-Islam, etc.)! I know this first-hand -- my girlfriend (hopefully soon to be wife) is VERY much a self-respecting woman and has NO desire for Trump (or anyone else besides me) to grab her by the pussy, and yet she supports Trump because she says he is more qualified! And the same goes for MILLIONS of other women who support Trump! 2601:646:8E01:7E0B:F88D:DE34:7772:8E5B (talk) 12:19, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Also, Trump's political positions are decidedly populist, so by that metric he is NOT an elitist! 2601:646:8E01:7E0B:F88D:DE34:7772:8E5B (talk) 12:21, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

(ec)So you were among the national minority who was suckered in by that billionaire elitist. Good for you. Recounts can occur if they're requested, but there's nothing in the news about it tonight for the presidential election. No point in bothering if it won't affect the outcome. At the state level, at least some states have to certify their election results by some point later this month, so in close state-level races there could be recounts. And you may recall that Minnesota had an extremely close Senate race a few years ago, and it was something like six months before they figured out who the winner was. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots23:52, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
As opposed to the national plurality (not majority, thank goodness) who were suckered in by that lying, cheating, stealing, terrorist-supporting, treasonous hag? I'll take the billionaire elitist over that any day, thanks! 2601:646:8E01:7E0B:F88D:DE34:7772:8E5B (talk) 00:23, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The OP should remove the part about being glad Trump won, since it does not paint him in a good light and is irrelevant to the rest of the question. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots00:33, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I will do nothing of the sort -- it is indirectly relevant (it prevents others from misconstruing my intentions in asking the question), and as for painting me in a bad light, half of my countrymen will say it doesn't! What does paint YOU in a bad light are your uncalled-for personal attacks against me regarding taxes! (And BTW, how do you know if I'm a "he" and not a "she"?) 2601:646:8E01:7E0B:F88D:DE34:7772:8E5B (talk) 01:17, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Because no self-respecting woman would support Trump. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots02:11, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest you talk to some REAL women (and not just liberals) instead of making unsupported normative statements regarding what a theoretical woman would or wouldn't do, you'll be surprised! And BTW, your statement is false on the face of it -- Trump would NEVER have won (much less scored a landslide) if half the women didn't vote for him! 2601:646:8E01:7E0B:F88D:DE34:7772:8E5B (talk) 02:55, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The IP geolocates to California. Fittingly, there's now a movement (or at least a stir) underway there to secede from Trump's America. If the IP actually is there, he might want to get up and move to Texas, where they'll welcome him with open talons. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:24, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If California does secede, I'll enlist in the army and help Trump TAKE IT BACK by force! 2601:646:8E01:7E0B:F88D:DE34:7772:8E5B (talk) 03:55, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how this is helpful. It's true that it can sometimes be better not to reveal such personal details out of fear of colouring the responses, but sometimes it can also be helpful if it can give people an idea of what you're asking. More importantly, I don't think many will say you shouldn't mention you supported Clinton, or 4 or 8 years ago Obama or whatever. So ultimately whatever the perceived negatives of Trump it doesn't seem useful to say people shouldn't say they supported Trump but can say they supported the other ones.
