What was this 1980s card-reading device for teaching speech sounds?

edit

In the early 1980s in the UK, when I was being taught some basic literacy (aged about five), the school had this card-reading machine that taught the alphabet. It was (IIRC) a grey box, and there was a set of cards, one for each letter of the alphabet. You'd put the card in the machine and it would read out the letter's name, its sound, and a sample word, like "A -- /æ/ -- apple", or "X -- /ks/ -- X-ray". Any ideas as to what this piece of kit was?
