In honor of Women's History Month and the ArtAndFeminism Wikipedia Project, the Newcomb Archives & Vorhoff Library Special Collections and the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane University are organizing and hosting New Orleans' second annual Art+Feminism edit-a-thon. The event will focus on improving Wikipedia entries related to notable women artists and art world figures, with an emphasis on artists from the Gulf South. Activities will include new editor orientation and training. Coffee and snacks will be provided. Happy hour to follow at The Other Bar.

When
Friday, March 4, 2016
2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Who
All are welcome! No advanced technical skills required.
The purpose of Art + Feminism is to encourage women, transgender and non-binary individuals, and other gender minorities to contribute to Wikipedia. Less than 10% of Wikipedia editors identify as female; even fewer identify as transgender or non-binary. This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge. Therefore we invite people of all gender identities and expressions, particularly transgender, cisgender, and gender nonconforming women, to address this absence by attending an in-person, communal updating of Wikipedia’s entries on art and feminism.
What to bring
A laptop computer (extension cords and power strips are also nice). We will try to provide some laptops to borrow, but please bring your own if possible.

Goals

edit
  • To encourage inexperienced editors (especially women, transgender and non-binary individuals, and other gender minorities) and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia
  • To improve a selection of Wikipedia articles related to women artists, critics, art historians, and other women in the visual arts
  • To increase awareness of the research resources freely available through libraries, archives, and museums

List of articles to work on

edit

Volunteers should feel free to add the names of notable women in the arts who need a better Wikipedia presence, especially ones whose articles could be improved by the inclusion of research resources from the Newcomb Archives & Vorhoff Library Special Collections and the Newcomb Art Museum. The list is not intended to be comprehensive, but rather to provide a starting point for work by edit-a-thon participants. If you are not sure where to start, don't hesitate to ask for help.
